While out riding Sunday my hubby and I happened by this little convenience store and low and behold the blooms on the Daturas were so beautiful....This patch is planted right next to the road and they are thriving....Thank Goodness I had my camera with me or I woulda been kicking myself all the way home..... .........:o)
White Daturas at the Quick Stop
What a great mass planting! I'm also glad you had your camera!
So pretty! Perfect for here also I would suspect since they like some neglect. They are so happy there!
Sounds like free seeds to me. LOLOL!!!!!!!! Very nice pic.
Got some when I took the pix....... LOL... :o)
Willow Wasp, Glad you had your camera with you. I don't think I would ever see such a sight here in WA, too short a season. Nice shot. I keep a One time only camera in my car sor just such times. Donna
Those are some nice dats. Glad that you got some seeds from them.
I deleted this photo from my photo album and now I have to Bring this back up for a friend to see...
LOL WW! I have to do that all the time!
Willow...I'm happy that you brought it back up. I looked at your pic back in August and I still think it's outstanding. I have this Datura and can't wait until it's this big. Thanks!
I was by this little store the other day and did'nt have my camera, again they were full of blooms and almost twice as big..I'm going to go back this weekend and take the camera and get another shot...you will be impressed.
I found out the city has this planted and plant other corners here, but this is the only Datura they have.
Next year I'm gonna offer them some seeds of the other colors.. :o)
Rootdoctor and Debby :-( did you forget about me? *sniff sniff*
Hey, Annabelle: Just picked some dbl. purple datura tonight. Hang in there girl. Still waiting on the triple golden queen pods to burst open. Seems like they take forever to mature.
Root: that is going to be quite a show. Just lovely. I noticed my leaves tonight are starting to yellow. Sigh, sniff, that means the season is about to come to an end here.
Question for the long time dat growers. The supposed bible I have on dats and brugs states that dats are an annual and only the brug is a true perennial. But I have seen several postings suggesting that in warm climes the daturas come back every year - not from self seeding but from the same rootstock? What is your experience?
i have grown different varieties of daturas for several years. Datura inoxia i have never to replant ever. it always come back from the root zone each year. the winter here in the desert of S. Calif. goes down to 10 degs. F.
if not mistaken, the photo above is D. inoxia. it is one datura that is ever faithful in coming back each year. perhaps, if u got D. inoxia, pot it before the winter frost, and it will come back to life for u when the weather gets warmer. hth... ma vie
jagonjune, I have datura wrightii, which looks like a larger version of d. inoxia. (Or that is the way I understand it.) It will come back every year from rootstock. There are many different kinds of dats and some of them are an annual, or a tender perennial. The pic Root posted just above is a double/triple yellow datura. There are white/purple triple dats called Black Currant Swirl. Both these would be considered an annual. I have many that I keep in pots and bring them in over winter. I have 2 different plants that are going on 5 years old. If I remember right, they are only hardy to 55 degrees. Root....where are you???
Here is a pic of d wrightii. The blooms are 8-9" long and as big as 6" across. They open at dusk until around noon the following day, and are very fragrant.
Brinda,I am in KC,I grow them as annuals.
LOL Root...I know where you are!!! I meant...add you 2 cents worth to the question!
Brinda,I may have to try the pot thing,I gave a double to a buddy and it bloomed all winter for him,I have not tried letting the root set to see if they will come back here, may have to try that too!
Bob, the Datura Inoxia i have is planted on the ground. they die when the winter here is down to 10*F, but come back to life from the root level when weather get warmer. i purposely made the experiment last year to see what will happen. the surprise is on me when they came back to life LOL! at least now i know i do not have to replant them :).
WillowWasp, I would be in shock if I ever saw such a welcomed sight! Someone actually planted a beautiful unusual plant for the public to view. Down here it is always the same tired flowers over and over. What luck.
