These little lilys came up out of no where.....I was planting some Mexican hibiscus along the walk way and I spotted some little sprouts coming up next to the house....I've watched them for days and last night they began to open.....they are quit a surprise....such a pretty red......but I don't know what they are..... :o)

It's got to be some kind of Amaryllis, I would think ... someone who knows will come along.

They are lovely. Lucky you!

Beautiful surprise!! Is this a new house for you?

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes it is a new house to me......We spent 2 years in an apartment before we found this lovely small brick house on the river.......The yard was a mess and there were very few plants here.....mostly trees and a few shrubs...So I had a new palate to work with....But there are some new things coming up and I am waiting to see what they are..... :o)

oh how fun for you willow. congratulations on your new home and your new pallet. the flowers are lovely too. don't you just love surprises like this. :) debi z

Thanks debi_z, it has been quite an experience, I am still wondering what to do with the access path to the river......I think I may put a trellis there with some MG's or something like that ........have to be careful not to block it to much since the fella's are going back and forth with fishing gear...I'm still thinking it over... :o)

willow,
i'm not sure how close those two trees are, but if you strung some wire or grape vine, across between them , and had a couple of tall climbers going up the trees and over, it sure would be lovely and you could make it high enough so shoulder carried fishing poles could pass through. there are a few different climbing hydrangea's. slow growers but big and beautiful when established. mg's would be nice, clematis, oh there are so many nice vines out there. :)

Your plants look like Ox Blood Lilies - Rhodophiala bifida to me. http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=rhodophiala&spell=1

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I know you cant see it really well in the photo but those 2 trees are at the water's edge almost and would be in the way of the guys casting.......so I have been given strict orders I CAN NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THEIR WAY!!!!AND I have to stay back about 10 feet from the 1st bank ...lol... Hah,the 10 ft rule was dead before he said it ........ I put elephant ears in yesterday right at the first bank......It was just too bare looking, know what I mean.....and the bank was eroding there...... :O)

willow, the 10 ft rule sounds "ludicrous" to me too. lol elephant ears will look lovely there and of course you NEED to work on that erosion problem. good girl! :)

Hi Willow, I don't know what your lilys are, but I would bet that you may have more bulbs coming up in different seasons. When we moved into our house, the yard was a mess, shrubs overgrown, etc. We watered and fertilized to bring back the vegetation, and with the different seasons, freesias, wood hyacinths, Kahili Ginger, and gladiolas came up.

Some time later, I found out that the previous owner had been an avid gardener, but she had passed away and the house was on the market for quite a while.

So, you may have more surprises coming your way.

WillowWasp....Baa is probably right, but could your flowers be "Naked Ladies" or "Surprise Lilies"? http://davesgarden.com/t/394036/LYCORiS+

Best Wishes in your new home. Happy Gardening and Happy Living !!~

Thanks for the link....I dug some of these yesterday and couldn't belive it....the bulbs were a foot underground...first shovel cut stalks, second shovel started bringing them up, man what a surprise...

..no wonder it took them so long to come up...poor things glad they didn't "run outta gas" before they made it to the top..... LOL

That part of the yard is rock hard and I will have to improve it to plant other things next year, although they did real good there I'm gonna move'um anyway.....

When we moved here the house had been vacant for about 8 months and there weren't many signs of life in the yard except for thistles and sagebrush. We remodeled soon after so the yard was full of lumber and other building materials for several months. Then came winter with frozen ground and temps down to 0. The next spring I started watering and plants that had been sleeping came to life, first the bulbs, then peonys, lilacs comming from the roots, and a few iris and other things. I had no idea what was there. You're probably due for a few more pleasant surprises.

They look like ox- blood lilys to me ,too. They're gorgeous!

Berrygirl, from what I've read and the pictures I've seen that's what they are... They stayed in Bloom over a week and really were pretty. They will have a better home next year... :o)
