Super Leaf Serration

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

I have an 11 week old seedling that has marvelous leaf serration on all the leaves thus far.
It is a Buttercream X Butterfly cross from Callalily and I really hope this follows through on the mature leaves as well.

Looks really nice. I think it is great to get some new leaf looks on the brugs. Hope the blooms will be beautiful for you.

WOW,Love those leaves!!!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Very nice! Let us see a pic if it blooms before frost.

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

This has not a hope of blooming before frost LOL. I started it June 1st and it is only a foot high right now.
Hopefully next year... :)
I will keep this one for the foliage alone if the mature leaves are this way as well. It is a nice dark green and would compliment any color the flower turns out to be I feel.
Here is a single leaf pic.

I think I'd just name it Sabertooth and be done! Wow is that serrated! I think you are right, any bloom will look good on those!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Fantastic leaves! If the flowers are like butterfly you have it made! I have never even heard of Buttercream before. Susie sure has a way with her hybrids. This one is special! Great job RuthAnn. What do you think about rooting a couple of pieces to make sure it lives on if the mother plant does not make it thru the winter. If I get such a special one I am going to do that first thing just in case.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Wow I love those leaves. Hope it turns out to be a real beauty.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Who needs a bloom when you have a leaf like that!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I love good foliage. Those are gorgeous. (and not a bug bite)

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I have Buttercream from Calla, had no idea what it was? I also have Butterfly, maybe I should try pollinating when Buttercream is bigger?

Those leaves a beautiful!

Thank you.
I live in a shorter growing season than most of you and flowering does not begin for me until July usually. [July 3rd this year] and ends when frost comes around the end of September.
Leaf shape and structure have become important to me because I get to look at them so darn long :).
Hibiscus, which parent of the two has the similar leaf as this seedling to account for this shape?
Kell, I will be sure to protect this one, I already have a few that want cuttings just because of it's foliage.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Very nice leaf structure there RA49 and I was going to say alsothat i would have kept that one also for the foliage if not for the flower.

RuthA, I went out and checked.....neither Butterfly nor Buttercream have anything other than regular leaves. Looks almost like my Datura leaves?? Have to ask Susie.

Any seedlings I have with L'Amour as a parent seem to have your beautiful serrated dark leaves, could this be it?

None of my L'Amour seedlings have such incredible leaves Gloria. I just love them! Has Susie seen this thread? I wonder if any of her babies at Tracey's house look like this one. I'll email Susie and see which parent she thinks caused this. They are so deeply cut. I have never seen such deep serration, has anyone else? They would be so pretty red tinged.

Some of Susie's babies are so incredible, she really has odd ones. Are there any bi-color euro brugs? I wonder if she lives near a huge nuclear power plant......LOL

Who are the parents of Buttercream and Butterfly? Maybe the gene comes from them. I love the leaves on this one! Of course I love the Dr and Whiskers too. :) I have seedlings of L'amour as one parent or the other and I don't have any neat leaves like this either. Hmph!

Buttercream came from a pack of seeds from LBJ.

Thanks Susie. These leaves are quite something, aren't they?
This is a pic of the second seedling I have of this same cross.
The color is a different shade of green [almost a smoky green] and the serration is not as deep but still numerous.

I looked at my 6 L'Amour seedlings and this is the most serrated leaf I could find on any of them. I planted my L'Amour and my Buttercream seedling 5 months apart so there is no chance that I have confused the two or mixed up the tags.

I love all these leaves. Cute toes too Ruth Anne. :)

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

I really like the serration, I hope the blloms are as special, that's a keeper!!!

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

I like the leafs.

Ruth Ann,
Whiskers tends to have very serrated leaves like the ones above. I have a couple of seedling crosses with Whiskers in their genes and the leaves look exactly like yours above. Its nice to have brugs with leaf interest because color could be bred into their F1 cross.
