Hello everyone! My name is Karen.I am a novice gardener from Long Island, NY. I am attempting to transform my small 50x100 yard into a garden paradise (big dreams, I know1!) My property used to belong to an elderly lady who planted every inch of the yard with flowering shrubs, iris, and daylilies, but she became ill and everything sadly became hopelessly overgrown. My husband, who HATES yardwork (gasp!) ripped out EVERYTHING, even the trees, and planted grass. Now I have to start all over again! All I have left is a big gorgeous blue spruce on the side of the front yard, one big healthy lilac bush on one side of the house, a lone spruce on the west side of the yard, a pretty but bug infested rose of sharon tree on the west side of the house, and a row of spruces along the back fence.
I dug in a few beds in early summer, and so far everything I have planted has grown wonderfully! I planted a hardy hibiscus which is huge now and blooming amazingly, a tree peony High Noon which is healthy but tiny yet, and a David Austin rose "Mary Rose" - that happens to be my daughters name! and it is sooooo beautiful! I got it from Wayside Gardens in early May, and it was just a few canes. Now it is 4' tall and blooms continuously!
Anyway, I'm sorry I'm such a chatterbox, but I'm just so excited about my new gardening hobby!!!!
BTW, I would especially love to meet other Long Island gardeners here!
Hugs and smiles,
Karen
New from Long Island, NY!
Welcome! It sounds like you started with a clean slate so you can just kind of go wild planting things. We are glad to have you here chattering away about your garden since we all do that too and love hearing about what others are growing. Now that you have joined Davesgarden you might have to schedule computer time to keep it from interfering with garden time. Some of us (maybe most of us) are addicted to this website. Have fun.
Karen, I agree with MaryE...you are going to get addicted to this site. Join us in chat on Tuesday night at 7 PM...or Thursday morning at 7 AM...meet lots of folks. Good to have you. Jo
Hi Karen,
I am new here myself this week, so I don't know too much about the forums. I do know that everyone I have met has been really nice. I used to live on LI, now CA for the past 30 yrs. My family are there in Babylon, Saville and Manorville. Bellemore is in Nassau county, right?
I am new to daylily gardening and find it addictive! This site has so, so many forum so enjoy yourself 'exploring' and like MaryE said, being on the forum can become addictive too. I was an early to bed, early to rise person. Now, I am a late to bed, early to riser! Margie
A warm welcome, cupoftea, from South Louisiana. There are several New Yorkers here. In fact, 37

Maybe someone will plan a round up in your area.
Anyway, you are gonna love it here, so much to learn, so many nice people to learn from!

Cupoftea, Welcome from the state of Washington to the great garden of Dave's. These gardeners are delightful!
cupoftea, Welcome to DG. But I have to say IF I had been you, I wouldn't have been able to join because I'd be in jail for killing my husband, LOL!
I love your screen name. My very first screen name when I finally got a modem and went online was "TwoTeacups." Came from a Haiku (sp?) poem:
"Here at the Frontier,
the leaves are falling.
There are Barbarians all around,
And You, You are a thousand miles away.
There are always two cups on my table."
Welcome to DG.
Hello everyone, and thank you all for your warm welcome! I am definately addicted to Dave's garden and all the wonderful and helpful people here!
Darius, I had a laugh at your comment about my husband!!! He is a non-gardner who's idea of gardening is to plant grass and a few of those 'nice round bushes' (gag!). Well, we agreed the yard is MY domain now, as long as I do all the maintainace work. But to me, it's not really work - I love getting my hands (and feet, and clothes, even) dirty! It's sooo relaxing to me!
Picturelady, you have family in Sayville? I grew up there!! Wow, small world! Bellmore is in Nassau county, yes.
Well, I am starting out with a 'clean slate' in my yards, but my problem is - if I planted everything I want , with all the wonderful different plants and types of gardens, I'm afraid I won't have any lawn left for my daughter and her friends to play on!!! Gee, there's a lot for sale across the street.......
cupoftea - welcome to d.g. my wifes family is scattered all over long island. from valley stream in nassau to islip and farmingville in suffolk. well, enjoy the website, its a real wonder.
Beware the Brugs forum ~ they lured me in and I've become addicted!
Seriously, welcome to DG's, Cupoftea! I've been here two years and I learn something new almost every day ☺
Glad to know ya Cupoftea.....Hope you like it here in the garden......(Ü)
Cupoftea, a warm welcome from the concrete slabs of the Bronx :-) With a limited space (anything under four acres) I suggest that you not spread yourself too thin but find one species as a focal point in which to specialize and other plantings as accent plantings. Brugs are my addiction now and if you want any cuttings/seeds/seedlings or just encouragement, give me a shout. If you have the courage to face an addiction, check out the 'Brugmansia and Friends' forum. Most of all, have fun. You are surrounded by folk who love to help. No strangers, only friends you haven't met yet. One of your many new friends, Padre
