Another Eric seedling

Hamilton, Canada

Opened for the first time last night. Its white, looks very much like a suaveolens, but it's fragrance is like black licorice. This was a concensus by the neighbours...lol.

Does anyone have a good picture of Isabella? I have several of Erics's Isabella hybrids flowering. I would appreciate it very much. These seeds came to me via Theresa as Eric's "mixed" and I have others that came via Owen as "Isabella" hybrids. One pink especially promising because of its swirled tendrils. A white one looks promising because the flower's edge is particularly wavy and it smells like anise or black licorice.

Black Licorice?...really?

Sue,
Thanks a million. Eric's "Isabella hybrids" are darker pinks and have longer flowers and wider skirt diameter than the original Isabella. In addition, the pink color goes higher up the throat of the trumpet. I'm going to keep them and compare them to others that are just starting to Y. I'll keep the best out of the group.

The white on is really pretty and the scent is exactly like black licorice or anise. I have a few neighbours whom I now have become brug converts and they all agree that the scent is definitely like black licorice or anise, plus its a very strong scent. I have it right outside the front door and the entrance hallway of the house smells wonderful at night. My porch now has all the brugs that are blooming and its really pretty to see them.

I know there are a lot of white out there, but this one I'm going to definitely keep due to the unusual fragrance.

One seedling with the swirled tendrils. It starts as a delicate peach pink and then turns pink. I measured the depth of the color and its 4" deep from the botton of the skirt up towards the corolla.

The other one that is blooming has short tendrils, a little deeper pink than the one mentioned above and the color depth is 3" deep from the bottome of the skirt up towards the corolla.

My photos are back yet from being developed, but I will post when they come in.

last edit I promise.
I should mention that I water these plants once every other day. I don't have any special additives in the soil for water retention and they are in pots. They haven't even so much as wilted even on hot days, but I have other seedlings wilt by the end of the first day. These two aren't even bothered by bugs and the others are BUG MAGNETS.

Remember two years ago how we (or maybe it was just me) freaked at him using roundup on his brugs, and mowing them down with a lawn mower...he certainly seems to have been right about just keeping the tough ones.

Arlene,
Well do I remember! I've stopped pampering my brug seedlings. Last year Last year in all my zeal and enthusiam I babied them along, hyper fertilized them and did all sorts of things to them. This year I realized that in order to get a proper assessment of a brug SEEDLING you have to just RESTRAIN yourself from giving them too much TLC, how else can you ascertain whether or not they are a good hardy healthy plant and a keeper. And like Monika does you have to have a critical eye and then COMPOST any that aren't good producers. No need to have poor performing brugs in circulation NO MATTER HOW TEMPTING IT IS TO SHARE WITH OTHERS.

#4 This one is solid pink right up to the corolla! Lovely swirled tendrils, and a soft pink. Definitely a keeper!!!

#6 Solid white, the flower is a small trumpet shape rather than a funnel. Really pretty, no stripes either. Fruity fragrance, haven't decided yet on this one whether to keep it or not.

Pollinated both plants with KBS. First set of photos are back from being developed, will post later.

Too bad you don't have a digital Joydie. A picture is worth a thousand words. You should get one like Poppysue. It takes great pics and is so economical. I may get one just for close up day shots.

Put it on your wedding present list. You are getting married just next nonth, you could then take pictures on your honeymoon also. And have it earlier!
