I have tried rather unsucessfully to grow an avocado plant. I finally got 2 seeds to sprout but they are spindly and do not grow too well, any suggestions?
is your avocado just from a "grocery" seed? what are you doing with it to encourage speedy growth? looks happy
yes, from one of the big smooth avocados. the seed was
very large. when the plant reached 2', i cut the top off so it would branch. other than that ive done nothing special.
i feed it and my other plants weekly, liquid miracle grow in the water. it drinks lots of water in our dry climate.
i have never repotted it, that is what killed them in the past for me, and it is doing great. its about 2 yrs old.
I only start avocado seeds that have already started sprouting inside the avocado. This is readily apparent when you open up the avocado to slice it. I have never had any success trying to start unsprouted seed--you know, with the toothpicks in the jar of water on the windowsill. So whenever I see a seed sprouting I just place it in a small pot, in a mixture of half sand, half potting soil, and it almost invariably starts growing. Right now I have two Haas types growing in matching big plastic pots--they were sprouting when I bought them from the grocery store, and they are very good tasting, much better than our Florida light green, smooth types. I will have to overwinter them in a greenhouse, as they can't go into the ground here in Northcentral Florida, zone 8b. I will probably never get any fruit, but I just read that the leaves can be toasted and chopped up and sprinkled over food.
I get the avocado to come up by putting the seeds into a pot with another plant. That way they get enough water. but after they come up a few months later the leaves start to dry out and then I loose the plant. Any suggestions as to what I need to do to keep this from happening?
