Ipomoea indica
This is just one example of it covering a tree. It blankets everything, and winds around everything.

Wow, Bob, that is a great shot, where was this taken? I see Palm trees in the background.
This is in Encino, California, just north of Los Angeles
Wow Palmbob, I've got a tree I don't like & that MG can cover it anytime. That is a great photo.
Broots,
Don't count on it unless you have a long growing season like Palmbob. All Ipomoea's do great here in zone 6 however after the first freeze their gone. If you want to see flowers here in Maryland before July it's a good idea to start your Morning Glories or Moonflowers inside in peat pots long about March.
Robert, long growing season is something we don't have. We're lucky if we get 90 frost free days some summers. We have already had frost but it was just mild & didn't lose anything. I have never tried starting m.g.'s inside, I usually just direct sow the end of May. They don't start blooming til beginning of Aug. I know I wouldn't have a chance on growing something like Palmbob.
The tri-lobed(!) leaves in combination with the location and the 'unusual' color of the blooms lead me to identify the plant pictured to be Ipomoea indica...
Ipomoea tricolor does not have trilobed leaves and the plant posted is chock full of trilobed leaves...
Please(!) consider that the plant shown is actually Ipomoea indica as entered in the PlantFiles here

dadgum! that vine is bringing back horrible thoughts of Kudzu. hopefully it doesnt get as bad or as fast. here kudzu grows more than a foot each day
I know this is an old conversation about this plant but I wanted to add that this one is not the usual morning glory. It is a plant from hell. It also does not set seed but it spreads from tons of runners it sends out which all root as they touch dirt and then these newly rooted plants all in turn send out at least 5 runners from each rooted spot. These runners can go forever looking for soil to root in and then it again will send out 5 or 6 runners from there. Over and over again until it covers a house or a canyon, choking all over plant life it encounters. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY ITS PRETTY LOOKS! And do not think you can control it.
I kept one in a pot for several years thinking I was in control. Even when I found it had sent out runners from the back of the pot which had gone over many feet of concrete along the fence line looking for soil, I thought I could keep it in that pot. Well 2 years later it was all over. It had sent out runners from the drainage holes in the base of the pot and because it was among many other potted plants I did not notice That evil plant made it in to my front bed and sent runners all over. I am still trying to get them all out. I killed that plant and rue the day I fell for its beauty!
I swear it has a brain!

I had a similar experience at my last home. Thankfully that is someone else's problem now.
What gets me is they sell this plant from so many nurseries, even HD carries it and it never has a warning on it to beware. Though most people just would not understand how aggressive this plant is even with a warning. I sure didn't even though I had seen whole houses covered with it. I thought keeping it in my courtyard, in a pot, so far from any soil, I would be in control. It took it a awhile to figure out how to escape without me catching it, but it figured it out.
