I had no idea that Madagascar Palms got this big. My biggest is only 31 inches tall. It is branching at the top in 4 separate directions. Is there any special care it requires now that it's branching?

That's a neat palm, O Mad One. Since I don't know where you are [one of problems with this list] by zone, temp range, soil, and so forth, it's hard to advise. I'm in southwest Florida growing these plants in our native black sand--a mixture of sand, humus [mostly rotted pine needles and live oak leaves] and whatever. I have most of mine in pots. I water them regularly--although they do not complain of neglect--and I fertilize them with osmocote twice a year. This year, I intend to put up to 10 more of them in the ground.

Could someone please tell me at what height madagascan palms grow? I have one that is 1.3m high. I live in the Bay of Islands,New Zealand. Do they flower? At what stage do they throw pups?

No pups nor kittens here.

Ulrich, thanks very much for that. Im wondering why some of those palms are very tall and others about the height of ours. Is that because they are in a warmer climate? We have ours against the house and dont want it growing too high because of the eaves.
How did you know I named myself after our pup-lol?

Just psychic (~:
Yes, they get taller in the tropics.

Could someone please solve my problem. I have a madagascan palm, and it has grown 60cm in 3yrs. Suddenly its green leaves are blackening at the tips. What is going on? I haven't been changing anything in the way I take care of it since the day I bought it.
tnx

great picture I have one about 5 ft. when do they branch out and or flower? Cathy

I was given one that is almost 8 ft tall in a pot. It outgrew its former home. It is in a patio area and gets direct sun only about 3-4 hours a day. I live at 4000 ft. in so. Arizona, water it on a drip daily in the summer. Temps in the upper 90's. Last winter I left it out and the leaves froze one night. I brought the denuded trunk inside. This spring it leafed out and it looks like it is branching about 4 or 5 branches. Have never seen it bloom. It seems happy and gets fertilizer when I remember it every few months.

Would really like to cut it down to 4 ft, but don't think it would develop new roots. Any suggestions?
