Gardeners world special

Weymouth, Dorset, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Did anyone watch the special on allotments? Made you want to dash out and get one.My sister keeps on about going halves with one, trouble is I suspect that one between us wouldn't be big enough to do what I wanted!!
I loved the camaraderie that it portrayed, wether they're all like that I don't know.
I especially liked the walled ones, like little gardens ,with a door.
Are allotments peculiar to England? or do other countries have them?

Missed it :(

I missed it too Sue but I would not be mine without all mine. The commaradie is good but it really depends on the age distribution. On mine there are very few young gardeners and we are quite spread out but now, after 3 years I am becoming on of the "guys" which believe me is quite an honour indeed!!

I would recommend an allotment to anyone. Get one Sue with your sister. Start off slowly as it is hard work and you need to put in alot of hours. Then if you want to take it further and expand then you will be best placed to know what your abilities are.

btw Mark have you found anywhere for your hgs yet?

I saw it and have always wanted one

and .....

in todays local Sunday paper a Belfast farmer has stopped farming and turned his land into allotments any size you want. He will even do weeding for those who cant visit every day. He has made on site car parking, toilets and water

weeding!! I wonder how long that service will last!! LOL

may be a thing of the future though as more farmers are struggling ans allotments become sought after, and especially as so many seem to be lost to the developers!

Is that too far for you to travel??

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

it's about 25 miles away on the far side of Belfast

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

OH! :((

heres hoping a farmer nearer to you follows his example?

did they say whether there was alot of demand for his plots? and how much was he charging?

I left the paper at a friends house this morning. He'll keep it for me

Thats what I could do with Mark, perhaps I could persuded family to move to Ireland. What a good idea though, rather than letting land go to waste.

I had an allotment on a farm about a half mile away from me. It was brilliant but hard work. Loved finding my children ( who were small at the time) sitting in the cowshed with my long gone ( & v much missed ) mother who had kept livestock ... fingers in calves mouths...calves sucking away. They've never forgotten it

the plots - any size - are £175 per square metre

oops £1.75 per square metre
