My first

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

OK - everyone has to post their first and here is mine. These came from our wonderful tiG. I was a bad parent in one respect - I did get the tags mixed up - so if anyone can help identify, I'd be most grateful.

I was an absolute disaster yesterday. The blooms were just starting and I couldn't find my camera. It fell out of my pocket and was in the edge of the car between the door and the seat. I hurried home today, after finding the camera to take this picture.

It's one of a pair that are presiding over my hosta bed.

Thanks for looking. I'll post the set in the next message.

The pair - *big grin* Up here in Albany, NY, you just don't see Brugs in outdoor gardens. Maybe there are some, but in three years here, I have never seen a single one.

Sorry the picture is a bit blurry.

And finally, a close-up.

Description, low hanging single flower, peach-ish pink color, no scent.

I keep going to the window, looking out and reveling - I GREW THESE, ME! SANDRA! WHO COULDN'T GROW ANYTHING UNTIL A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO! MEEEE! SEEEE, EVERYONE, LOOK WHAT I GREW!

If I could have brought this to work to attend meetings with me, I would have! ;-)

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Congrats, very pretty whatever the name! How well I know that feeling, I DID take mine to work with me(: And don't forget to recheck for scent after dark! (As I've learned here, lol)

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Sandra that's great you are hooked now!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Sandra I did send out an unknown pink this past fall. It's a heavy bloomer and that looks like it. I said back then that it was unknown, does that ring a bell??

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Oh, oh, you mean it's going to smell nice after dark??????? Heck, I ain't even gonna put on my shoes.

tiG - I am totally lost which is which, which is a disservice to the wonderful gift - I'll post the others when they bloom (in fact, I have another one that's like 16 inches tall with a Y and buds). I recall names like Dr. Seuss and Becca Probably not for these in the picture, but would you have sent those? Or maybe it's just names I remember from drooling.

You were the best, sent about 6 of them, in my chaos, I wrote everything down, then lost the paper. So, they're all a crap shoot - I got 4 of them to survive. One had a Y like 4 inches above the ground, but the dog knocked the fence on it and I lost part of it, but the rest is still doing OK.

Off to do some "smellin'" My neighbor already thinks I'm strange - I literally walk the whole yard every morning before going to work, now I'll be out there at night.

Gotta love it - byeeeeeeee

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I did send out Dr Suess and Becca Lynn too, there were about 10 different types I had cuttings from at the time. if you have never smelled one at night, beware. you might not come back in!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Yeah Sandra! They're gorgeous :] I took a brug to work with me once. I stuck it outside in our smoking area. I made everyone smell it too - LOL! Of course, everyone wanted cuttings after seeing one.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Good to know I'm not alone. I didn't take mine to work but boy, I sure wanted to. sbarr, your yard looks great. You should be proud. Lots of hard work there.

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

OK, went out for my first sniff - very nice. I didn't want to come back in - but, I did. I needed my camera again. Went back in, got Doug and made him come out and sniff. Pictures a flashin' - Ohhhhh, I need one from the opening. So here I am, lying on MY BACK in the garden, flashing away, and the neighbors are looking out their bay window at us.

sbarr,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I'm hoping for my first bloom soon as I think I see buds forming...

I'm just drooling over your pictures ~ how absolutely gorgeous! How much light does this one get?

Green with envy ~ lol!

Morph - pretty much full sun, but got a bit of shade earlier when it was growing. It's on the east side of a hedge, so when it gets to late afternoon, the lower part gets some shade.

But, up here in NY, it doesn't get very hot - maybe a few days in the low 90's this summer, that's it - rest is mid 80's. It's funny - it's finally getting almost hot here in August and people here are complaining - I'm thinking "You all need to experience some real hot weather" (used to live in Austin, TX where it would get hotttttttt and muggy).

But, I guess the flip side, when I complain all winter about the snow and others take it in stride.

Now my dilemma - I planted these in the ground, didn't sink a pot, so hopefully I'll be able to dig them up and bring in for the winter.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Sandra dig them early and let them get adjusted to a pot before frost. don't use too big a pot, you can prune the roots. it's very pretty, and it does look like that unknown pink I sent out. no way to ID for certain, sorry. but enjoy her!

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Beautiful, Sandra!

Nothing like the thrill of the first Brug blooming, eh?

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

Yippee! I'm so happy for you! It's beautiful!!! My first is coming soon, I have buds! I can hardly wait!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm so glad you are enjoying your first brugs. Just wait until you have 50 or more. They really are an addiction.

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Brugie - Oh, I get that impression very much.

I'm already trying to talk Doug into moving more stuff so I can have them along a fence on a busy street we're on. Boring Albany, NY - meet the trail of Brugs! I have never seen a brug outside in this city. Not to say there aren't any, but very few and they're hiding.

How hard is it to dig up ones in the ground and pot them for the winter?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I dug up plenty last year. It wasn't too hard but I spose it depends what the soil is like. I had posted a thread when I started digging them last fall. I'll see if I can find it.

I prefer the sink the pot in the ground method... rather than digging them up. It's a lot easier when you have a zillion plants to deal with.

Here's that thread http://davesgarden.com/t/363231/

My soil is very good, easily worked - we have quite a bit of sand. Heck, I can dig holes with my hands - don't even need a shovel. I'm so thrilled with these that I'd like to find a way to keep them over the winter and get a good head start next spring. Looking forward to your link. It's funny, over time, I end up finding your photos when I need them. Coke bottle propagating, etc. :) You've provided a lot of us with invaluable knowledge.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Congratulations! The first of many more to come!!
