Questions regarding allium

Miami, FL(Zone 10b)

I am thinking of planting some allium bulbs this fall. Am thinking of the larger types. Not sure that I want Globe Master or not. I have read their blooms get 10 inches in diameter. That seems pretty big and don't know what I would put with something that size. Any suggested varieties and sources for purchase? Also, what would be some good companions for them? TIA.

Globemaster and Gladiator are both large - 6" plus. They're wonderful. They last weeks and do look as good in your yard as they do in pictures. I am planning on getting several again this year and some of the smaller ones.

Decent companions would be late spring or summer flowers - any annual could be planted just to the side after these have died back. These grow huge mid-spring, then basically die back, so they don't take as much space as you'd expect. You can plant stuff in between and definitely in front of.

For sources, the best prices on these that I have found is Touch of Nature.

Yes masters are definately worth the price. I adore mine and the blooms do last for weeks. My globes are much fuller than the gladiotars and they were a few inches bigger. I planted different allims around like ivory queen, drumsticks, and mollies in whites, yellows, and red. Someone is doing a coop with alliums. Check the coop forum the prices are really good!

Just bought six Gladiator bulbs and have been prepairing a bed for them to go in. I have seen so many around here planted with Elephant Ears on the side as well as hostas, lilys or annuals..they all looked beautiful no matter what was around them..... :)

I love alliums! They have very different blooming times, I have a large array scattered in clumps throughout my flower beds, my new favorite is allium atropurpureum. It has rich black maroon umbrels that make upright umbrels eventually seeding in light green pods.

Check out Johnscheepers.com for very nive alliums and others at GOOD prices
