High schoolers chow on plants, land in hospital

Tanya Schevitz, Chronicle Staff Writer Thursday, August 7, 2003

Berkeley -- Three high school students who nibbled on a plant in People's Park in Berkeley in an apparent attempt to get high landed in the hospital instead, authorities said Wednesday.

Two 17-year-old boys who each ate several blossoms from an angel's trumpet plant Sunday were in good condition at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley, said the director of a summer academic program for high school students at UC Berkeley. The three students were enrolled in the program, called Education Unlimited.

The third student, a 16-year-old girl who ate only one flower, was treated and released Sunday night, said Matthew Fraser, the program's director.

"Our understanding is that they had heard from somebody in People's Park that this would be a legal high," he said.

Instead, "they were incoherent, and muscular control of their bodies seemed to have largely gone out," Fraser said.

The angel's trumpet is common in the East Bay and San Francisco. The plant, a large shrub with trumpet-shaped flowers, has acquired a reputation for psychoactive powers. But a plant expert cautioned that the flower is extremely poisonous and should not be used for a high.

"It is a really stupid idea because the line between intoxication and overdose is real slim," said Victor Yool, sales manager at Berkeley Horticultural Nursery.

No one else will be using the angel's trumpet in People's Park to cross that line. Campus workers chopped it down Tuesday.

Could have been the noise you where hearing in your yard,I was on a site that was selling Dats and Brugs in all forms, dried, fresh, seeds,it looked like a witchcraft thing,I think it was linked to one of MVRs sites she put up.

Next thing you know, kids will be smoking the curtains when left at home alone. This is so rediculous. We had an article in our local paper about the Angel Trumpets being so so poisonous, and the article suggested nobody should have one if they have small children.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

in all research i've done both datura and brugs are known to be poisonous. check this site http://www.erowid.org/plants/datura/datura_faq.shtml

No doubt they are poisonous, but so are Oleander, Azaleas, and scores of other plants. The idea is not to eat it. I do not think my local paper should have printed an article saying that people with children should not have Angel Trumpets.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I was told by someone and I don't recall who that if these plants were used properly that they were hallucinagenic and that a nursery someplace in Florida actually quit selling them because of that. How true this is I don't know because i've never tried it and have no intention on doing so
This could be just rumor though and you no nothing spreads faster than butter on hot toast than a rumor!

I agree Roz. I think when the paper draws attention to something like this, it just makes it worse.
