May be a stupid question. But I want to plant some clematis on top of a 4' railroad tie wall - will it grow down the wall??
I can't plant it on bottom due to neighbors.....
Does Clematis Grow down?
I would think that if it didn't have something to climb, eventually a lot of it would hang down. The only problem would be if each of the stems would cling together and keep it mostly upright. With my luck, it would do this, get heavy, and fall on the neighbors side and I wouldn't get to enjoy the blooms.
I actually want it to grow down so they can enjoy the blooms
kg6040, The inclination for clematis is to grow up but like Brugie said if there is nothing for it to cling to it should drape down, but where ever it can find a finger hold it will try to grow back up. I have a clematis growing in a metal obelisk, it grew tall enough to go out the top and hung down 3 or 4 feet, still blooming. Donna
I planted clematis in a planter box, they will try to hold on to anything they can climb but have eventually fallen over the sides.
Try the variety Huldine (pearly white with pale mauve bars). It's said to flower very well horizontally or trailing. Blooms July-Oct, 12-20'.
I'm trying to grow that one from the co-op thats only hardy to zone 7 ,in a hanging pot.
Florida siebodii? or something like that......
Yup, that's the one, C. Florida Sieboldii. It's a beauty! Hope you're planning to grow it in your greenhouse, c.c. I don't think it would survive your long cold snowy winters in upstate NY!
Any vine will grow upwards toward the sun or light. However, eventually, it will cascade back down when it reaches the top. That way you can enjoy the beautiful flowers from both directions!
Clematis "Huldine" is another excellent variety. Plus, it is resistant to Clematis wilt....a BIG PLUS!!!
Yup,its going in the GH,thats why I'm trying it in a hanging basket.......
It will be beau-ti-ful in a hanging basket! I never thought of growing Clematis in that fashion...what a wonderful idea!!! Thank you, I'm going to try it that way too!!!
P.S. Just make sure that the soil in the hanging basket doesn't dry out. I would add some water soluble polymer crystals, just to be safe.
They're already in there!
LOL
first thing I did!
Love to see a picture of it when it's in its "blooming glory"!
