creative brug pots?

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

Ok yall from reading my posts you know Im lol on a budget?? what are some containers that yall use to pot brugs in the ground and store in too during the winter? I noticed that kiddie pools are getting cheaper and cheaper and I had to wonder what I could do with some of those as far as wintering over my brugs. they are currently in the ground, and I have never had to overwinter them as I was given cuttings last winter. Can I root prune them when they start to go dormant, wrap the root ball in newspaper ( isnt the ink antifungalish?) thats a real word lol...and put a bunch in the kiddie pools with more soil. I have read that planting directly into the ground makes them grow faster and I as always want the best of both worlds without the backache.

I'm dollar challenged too, I was thinking about whether it would work to line some boxes with plastic garbage bags and use them as winter holding pots, I'm not sure if they would be strong enough

I always seem to have lots of empty nursery pots 1 gallon and up to 5 gallons. They come in handy for smaller brugs. You might find some used ones at a nursery. I think individual pots are easier to handle.

Some nurseries recycle and take back pots that they sold plants in. I would check to see if you could get any of those. If not, empty plaster or paint buckets that contracters use are great. Laundry detergent sometimes comes in huge plastic buckets and those are great to use as well. When I use them I drill big holes in the sides of the bottom. In the fall the handle helps to lift them. Over winter I put the bucket inside of a plastic bag.

You could try five gallon buckets. Sometimes deli's and groceries will give them away. If your brugs have already flowered, you could just take cuttings and leave the big plants to die. Small plants do fine in large disposable cups.

I use garbage bags. I actually wintered over MANY plants with little soil this way. Didn't lose a one. Of course, my method was born of laziness.

datdog--that method sounds like a winner to me?--thanks everyone---i have about 65 cuttings and seedlings now to overwinter--*crossing my fingers that all my cuttings make it* and I had no idea what I would store them in,---course I also have no idea WHERE Ill store them just yet either. lolol

Today I was thinking about growing some bushel gourds next year, do you think they would make good seedling pots?
