Problem with nonflowering brugs.

Hamilton, Canada

I have a few brugs that flowered last year that I overwintered. They haven't flowered this year and didn't produce flowers over the winter either. One is a suaveolens and the other 4 are hyrids of sorts. Is this normal? They get the same care as all my other plants.

PS,
Versi "Exotica" and "Golden Lady" now have Ys but the plants are only a foot tall. They certainly will look funny when they bloom. Can't imagine those big flowers on such small plants.

I don't know the answer to your questions. BUT, I would not complain if my seeds bloomed! LOL A bloom is a bloom! :) I will be watching for answers though. I have three others about 3-4 feet tall that I have had since last summer and they still have not even Y'd.

This is my first year that I wintered over big plants. I let them all go dormant in the basement. I thought I'd have loads of flowers by now but it seems like they're taking just as long to bloom as the new cuttings did.

I've got overwintered plants and cuttings. It seems that a lot of us in the northern areas are having trouble getting our brugs to bloom this year. I'm not overwintering a lot of big plants this year. Like Poppysue says, the cuttings bloom just as quickly, at least most of the time.

Brugie, people from the northern areas are not the only ones having problem with brugs. the heat wave here in the upper desert of So. Calif. killed a lot of my brugs and plants. the past 2 mos. we were having more than 110*F, sometimes 114. a few that survived are just now beginning to form leaves. what a weird year for planting :(. am sure there are others too.

Sorry to hear that you are loving brugs from the heat. You are just going to have to move to the mid west. At least it isn't 114 degrees.

We certainly aren't suffering from the heat here. I think the highest its been is 80 degrees, most of the time its been very cool. Lots of rain but I still water and fertilize.

I let these large plants go semi dormant over the winter. They continued to grow and produce Ys and lots of growth above the Ys. In fact most of them Yd several times. I thought I would have tons of blooms this year...notta. On the other hand, the ones that were started from seeds in the summer have Ys and lots of flower buds. I think neighbours are going to get some of last years plants that aren't doing much this year. I bet they flower in October or November! They only had but one or two flowers last year so I don't think they are worth me keeping them.

that is ok Brugie... i got lots of patience. eventually it will be cooler soon. and things will catch up. like i said last year, everyone can show their blooms now. i got the opportunity to show blooms on my brugs when the northern area is beginning to freeze.
