Yippeee!!!!!!!!!!!! I found a Canadian with a Plumeria!!
Now could some of the experts from down south please tell
me when is the best time of year to take cuttings from
this plant-they are as rare as hens teeth up here and I
really, really, don't want to make a mistake! Any special
growing tips would also be very appreciated. Thank you!
Plumeria-HELP!!!!!!!!
I think that spring is the best time to take cuttings of all plants.....So that they have time to make good roots.
i take my cuttings in the fall before i store them for the winter. here is a good site with tons of info.
http://plumeria101.com
Plumeria 101 is a great site. I rooted mine per pea gravel method and all are doing great. I find most plants root better in cooler weather. Of course I realize you don't have scorching summers like we do.
Thank you Mitjo, farmgirl21 and catlady-the site has been
bookmarked and if I blow it at least I have a source for
seeds!!
Lilypon, I have rooted them spring and fall, if you put them in sand and don't jiggle them they will root.
Thanks Weeds! The lady, that owns the plant, wants to
take the cutting in the fall. We'll go ahead with it
and I will put it under 24 hour guard!!
lilypon... u will need more than 24 hrs to wait & guard. more like 2 mos. or more. as they are slow to root. u will know roots is taken on when u see new leaf growth.
Thanks MaVieRose! 24 hours/day, 7 days/wk, for 8 weeks or more...I will be somewhat tired...but it will be worth
every minute of it!!!!!
just set them aside for a while. check from time to time... at least one day in a week. if i do recall right, they are propagated like brugs. i planted them in damp growing solution, never water again until new life shows... sparingly! hth.
so...don't water again until the leaf shows and then just
a little? Will the new cutting be somewhat dormant like
an adult Plumeria? About how often do you water your
cuttings?

i didn't water them, in some occassion i spray mist the top of the cuttings, to prevent them from drying out.
when i propagated the plumeria cuttings, it was winter time. i do not have a greenhouse, it was inside the house. since the house heater was on, i thought to mist the cutting, but i never watered again till i saw a new leaf growing. i allowed the pot to dry some before i watered again. hth
Thanks MaVieRose! My printer is working as I speak!!
I'm going to get a binder to put all these great propagating
/cultivation tips and tricks in! It will be the most
useful book I have ever owned!
always a pleasure to give a helping hand Lilypon :)! not that it is getting into my head, i guess the very reason why most of my friends here @ dg love me.LOL!!!
speaking of folders, i get mine at 99 cents store. i seem to have a folder for every specie of plant i grow. i get folder dividers at Walmart... the kind with the pocket on the each side of the page... just in case i don't have time to file, i slip the printed article on the pockets.
How can I get mine to flower?
It's 2-3 years old,I have it in morning sun, when I had it in full sun,it seem to be too much for it.
do u feed them? check this thread, go down to 3/11/03 on what eclipse has to say http://davesgarden.com/t/374979/plumeria
phosphorus help stimulate root and plant growth, and encourages flower and fruit production. it is the 2nd # in any fertilizer. hth
Thanks MaVie!!
u're very welcome Colie :)! u can see the higher # of phosphate on tomato fertilizer. Sam's choice tomato plant food for foliar feeding 18-18-21. Superphosphate granules,i always use in planting all my plants either in pots or on the ground. i foliar feed always every other watering schedule for all my plants. Superphosphate in my area is only available in nurseries. i have never seen them either in Walmart or HD.
remember always there are 3 #'s on fertilizer formula:
1st # is nitrogen - responsible for green coloration and rapid plant growth.
2nd # phosphorus as i have explained in the previous thread.
3rd # potassium - maintain plant vigor. encourages rooting and helps improve fruit quality.
use u're best judgement in picking fertilizer for specific plant need. i buy different formulas of MG or any foliar feeding for every plant i have around the house and the yard. hope this info help u.
MaVie,thank you so much for this information.I have made a copy of it-so I won't forget.
Caught the last part as well...gotta get those blooms!!
I was browsing through Dave's Gardens website and came upon this forum on Tropicals. I have been wondering when my plumeria will bloom...it has been three years. From the proceeding comments, it looks like I need to give it more sun and the proper fertilizer. Is it really true that branches only form after blooms? Mine is about 4 feet tall, with one lone side branch about 6 inches from the base. I am tempted to lop off a foot of stem from the top and see it I can root that part and keep my fingers crossed that branches will emerge somewhere along the stem. It is a great leafer and is growing vigorously. I hate to give up on it.
if it is standing straight and you have no problems with it i wouldn't cut it back just feed it. but if you want to cut it back i would let the cutting scab over a few days before you replant it again.
Lilypon.. I can't tell for sure but I think I see the formation of buds already on the very tip center. If you can get another picture that is a bit lighter and shows the center part I'll be able to tell you for sure.
Congrats on getting it rooted and growing!!!
Well get even happier since that looks like a inflo...your new baby is getting ready to flower :)
Hi Miss! This is an old post and that inflo was a year ago! LOL! Come on over to the Plumeria Forum here at Dave's!
Clare,
im a year behind it appears... i seen may and never looked at the year...LOL
That's okay, Miss! It looks like it was awfully early when you posted!
Yes :) ...you know im not awake till i had my coffee.
LOL.......thank you for resurecting this thread Miss, it brought back some smiles! It's Y'd now and I don't think I'll be seeing the inflo for another year or two now. :(
Lilypon, you could get flowers this year! Think positive and fertilize!
Imma gunna fertilize now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Ü :D Thanks for giving me hope Clare! :D
Lilypon, do you have a picture of lats years flower? what color was it?
It was white with a yellow center Miss. Unfortunately we had one of the coldest summers on record and most of the buds dropped before opening.......... only one opened up enough for me to see it's color. This summer is supposed to be very warm here so I'll keep my plumies inside until I know our nights will be above 75F.
I now have a pink one too :D Ü :D........MG99 was very kind and gave me one at the Canadian Roundup earlier this spring! :D

Here is the thread with the continuation of the story: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/430057/
Lilypon, don't wait that long for your plumie to go outside. As soon as you know that nights will be above 50, your plumeria should go outside. It needs to experience the longer days and extended light period as well as the heat and sun before it will bloom. Fertilizer is important too.
Clare I'll put it outside soon then (our nights, on the whole, are warming up quickly now). I guess I'm just a little gun shy of colder temps........but we are supposed to have our normal hot summer this year so my worries aren't justified. ;)
Lily, your worries are understandable:-) Plumerias can actually tolerate temps in the 40's so you will be super safe if you wait until temps are in the 50's. That way, you have the best shot at flowers this summer. Fertilize with a fertilizer that has a high middle number such as Schultz Bloombuilder, which is 10-52-10, as soon as your plumie is outside full time.
