I have a half Whiskey barrel as a water feature which was problem free until I brought in a Stratiotes aloides (Water Soldier) from a friends pond. Although I checked it for snails I wasnt good enough and now have a major snail problem. How do I get rid of/kill them without harming the Water Boatmen, Daphnias and Cyclops? They have to go as they are eating my water lilies as soon as the new leaves reach the surface
Snail problems
Might want to search for an aquatic snail killer - I know they make it but I don't know what effect it has on the plants....
maybe I could drop in a few blue slug and snail pellets
NOT
Thrushes, frogs and toads are the natural ecologically friendly method, but I'm not sure they'd take kindly to a journey through the post.
I have some books, so will look for ideas
and why not? you havent seen how many there are.
There certainly are aquatic snail killers available from pond/aquarium shops as moonlighting says
These say they don't harm other animals but I wouldn't trust them
Best thing is to float lettuce leaves (not seeds lol) overnight and remove them plus snails in the morning.
With the size of your problem it sounds as if a whole lettuce might be needed...
Here is a link I came across - it was written for the aquarium but I sure the same would work for pond....http://www.justbajan.com/pets/fish/articles/rid_snails/
Heres another.....http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/4742/snail_faq.html
Good links moonlighting :)
I was saying to Mark this morning that my newly acquired Blue Acara (Aequidens pulcher) are having an impact on the overpopulation in my tropical tank. I find empty shells and there are not nearly so many in evidence (perhaps they're just hiding LOL)
We discussed Botia, but I don't think he can use fish as the set up is fairly new and still going through stages of maturation. Also it'll be going below freezing in the winter
