The whole plant
Kyles Imperial Taro - What are these things? !
Several of mine are doing the weird offshoot thing too. I had never seen that til this year. I think the thing in the middle is/was a flower.
Wow! A gardener with nails and nailpolish! LOL
Liz,
Last September when I took up gardening I took my nails off after wearing acrylics for 25 years. I knew I could not garden with them on. A week ago I put them back on as my step daughter in Calif was getting married. I may keep them for a while and try gardening gloves but I have a feeling they will have to come off again. Even if I take them off, I will need gloves. I had nearly destroyed my hands not to mention my nails by not having the protection of gloves.
Hmm..I'm no EE expert, but I'd say that big thingy was a flower. Mine are producing the offshoots like mad. They go out a ways and then hook up at a right angle and make leaves. Where they turn up they touch the ground and form roots. They're babies! I've been cutting off the ones on the EE's in pots(no dirt to root in hanging off the sides), but leaving them to root on the inground ones.
Here's a wierder one. I have one that is putting out little baby plants from the leaf stalks instead of new leaves! You know how they split open to let a new leaf out? Well it splits and a clump of a little plant is in there. :) I dunno.
Hey Angie, I'd love to see a picture of that!
Thanks for the great pic Root and the red arrows!
(ahem . . . should I say Professor Root?) LOL
Well this guy kinda weirded me out. I thought maybe the thingy up the middle might be a seed pod.
Will keep an eye on my mutant EE.
It is a pod!Eco is right,it may not be fertile,if not it will slowly wilt, the blooms are an aquired taste(not showy),but a bloom is a bloom in my eyes.
Ok, so the left one slowly wilted and is probably not fertile. So now I will wait to see if the right one makes it. Thanks, Root!
I would, then trim back the stalk where it was, still want to see Angies plant coming from shoot pics.
Nice Nails A!
The thing in the middle was a bloom..cut it off below the swelled spot. The other thiungys are runners or offsets.wind them around inside the edge of the pot and barely cover with soil.new plants will develop from them.
Oh, thank you, Kyle! Will do that!
I have my imperial Taros in my pond they get these runners giving me a nice spread of leaves all around the pond. Grows rapidly in water.
I had one plant(small) in a pot and I sat the pot in a saucer and the whole pot is filled out with babies now. This is one of my favorite ears. I'll bet it is a beautiful site in your pond.
One of the nicest plant additions to a pond. For that tropical look
I've not seen this before, but it looks like the bloom is gone and the seed pod is forming. Wonder why mine don't do that?
Eco, if you have tooo many babies you can send them my way!!! What a cool plant!
I'm not sure how many of the offshoots are going to root, but I may have some to send later. Email me in about a month if you want to check in. :)
Twin,
Let them root and take them off & pot them up. You will have more pups. Or you can just let them stay with the mother plant and have a nice 'large' village in your container. I pot them up at the end of the season and give them away. Enjoy!!!
