What does this?

These little "C" cuts in the foliage?

I suspected hail? We have had a lot of rain and after one storm, I had lots of leaves, that had square type pieces just cut, all the leaf was there, so know a bug didn't chew on them.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think they are drunken cats. LOL!! Seriously, I've been blaming them on cats because we haven't had hail.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I haven't had hail here. I'm pretty sure this is from a bug. The Cs aren't always perfect but they cut slits it the leaves like that.

Perhaps ..
'Aliens' sampling your brugs!??? (((o:

I'm bound and determined to find out what does this. I don't think it's cats.... I don't have any on the brugs that I've seen.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I haven't had any bugs, since I got rid of the earwigs! Probably just changed my luck!

Sue... check for some grasshoppers. i am beginning to find a few around eating leaves on all my plants. i mean all plants! i try to keep a close eye on them as the grasshoppers do devour everything.

any evidence of slugs?

Its trying to make happy smiles all over your leaves......

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I found wooly worms on my brugs. They have almost taken one of them that was in the seedling row. Lots of them. Cute little fuzzy pale yellow ones. Anyone know what they turn into?

Cute little fuzzy yellow moths??? I'm sorry, I couldn't resist!
I will have to check my brugs and see if I have any smiley faces. I know the cats are out in full force eating them. The worst are the striped army worms, black with yellow stripes.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Had them earlier this year, but think I got them whipped before they did too much damage. These little fuzzy buggers are something else. I sprayed with BT and they act like it is candy. I'm going to spray again tomorrow. Been hand picking them, but they just keep appearing.

I probably would have made a remark like that myself. LOL!

I have not seen anything. All the leaf is intact, just broken through. We do have tree branches and debris when we have a storm, which we have had a lot of lately. 11" rain in July, 4+" in August so far, and it is only the 3rd.....

Hibiscus, we had wind the other day and it drove little pieces of sticks and even a cluster of dogwood berries thru my brug leaves.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh, Hibiscus, you really are getting nailed! We are having a wet summer here but nothing like what you have had - thank heavens.

Poppysue, I think it is must have rained acid cats. Or your brugs are being branded with a u or a c for some reason. what is your last name?

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I don't know what causes the C in the leaves but as I was makig my rounds around the yard this morning I noticed that my Rosamond has one leaf with that mark in it. I instantly started looking for cats even though that plant has not been attacked by them yet. I did find on the underside of one leaf a cat about and inch and a half long that was standing erect strait off of the leaf. Maybe he's the culprit but there's not enough left of him to identify after I finished with him!
I've had very bad luck with worms this year. I got rid of one bunch of cat's earlier this year and now a new crop has hatched out. Some of them you can hardly see. Though I have found some larger ones that apparently are doing their dirty work early in the morning and hiding out the rest of the day. Well I was off from work today so I caught up with them also. The big ones have actually been going into the trunks of the brugs.
