I hadn't thought of Barbados Cherry in years. Thanks.
My grandmother had a hedge of them around her house in Miami. I also remember the ripe fruit as quite nasty and tart-tasting but it made great jam.
The fruit is very sweet when ripe though i have had a random berry here and there that was sour.
they turn bright red and are best right before they turn soft.
to me they taste a lot like star fruit.
there is a surrinam maybe cherry that i saw as hedges around miami, which did have a disgusting tasting berry with some more pronounced shape.. slightly reminiscent of pumkin shape.
