My postman gave me some ginger plants last year which I planted. They have bloomed...the white blooms smell heavenly!!! But the foilage is always so ratty looking...brown spots, tattered ends etc. Is this natural with ginger plants? I would love to plant some more just for the blooms! Do they bloom the first year? Any ginger info appreciated! My soil is sandy and alkaline. Thanks!

Dale, you will have to work in some kind of compost,Peat is alkaline so it will not work,do you have access to bagged or real compost?I have no idea on Ginger, just got my first ones from great folks here,my best ones are in mostly shade, but like you it is Hot here.
Root, peat should be acid. Most premixed potting mixes add dolomitic limestone to balance the acidity of the peat.
Dale first rule of Ginger,Don't listen to me!LOL!Thanks Cala,I was typing with one eye,and no mind!
