i have 2 stargazers here that are from the same package of bulbs. they are bloomng now for the 3rd season. the lighter pink ones started to bloom about a week before the others, but they are next to each other in the garden with the darker pink ones. i also have lighter and darker ones in various gardens around my house blooming light and dark, with variable conditions. anyone know why this happens? or can direct me to a site to learn more.
thanks debi z a lilium lover
anyone know why stargazers bloom different shades?
I have some but they have never done that; they are always the darker color. Did you buy a lot of them all at once? It looks like you have 2 different lillies there, to me.
I think you have two different lilies too.
even though they were bought in the same package, bulb companies sometimes make mistakes and put different things in the same container.
i'll have to take pictures of the others i have out front that are "suppose to be stargazers" too. it just seems that it would be happenening an awful lot here in my garden, with different bags at different times. hmmmmmmmmmmmm? but nothing is impossible. i'll keep exploring. thank you for your time helping me out here. debi z
What woodspirit said is very likely. Especially from those bulb companies that supply to the DIY stores.
But it is also likely that they are all stargazers. The colors of lilies, especially orientals and orienpets can vary greatly depending on temperatures and amount of sunlight. Here in the hot, humid south a lily in full sun can wash out and become paler in color than the same lily growing under the trees in the cool shade. This was explained to me years ago by hybridizer Judith Freeman of Columbia Platte Lilies. She is a wonderful woman and I've spent hours on the phone with her. She is more than eager to share her knowledge with others. Not to mention she grows some of the most beautiful lilies!
Good Luck
thank you flutterby, i didn't think i was crazy. :) i think both are happening. sometimes it makesit difficult to id them from a mix, but i'll keep plugging along and learning. debi z
They may not be what you expected but they are all pretty! I'm just happy if they grow and bloom (kind of a beginner with lilys).
