AGGHHHHH Brug emergency........

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Just went to check on my garden- the one down the street - just found a whole patch of brug seedlings wilted to the ground. My township sprayed mosquito killer? weed killer? near the ditch, the over spray FRIED my brugs! I mean knocked them down to the ground. The plants down by the ditch are also wilted and burned. This is how I know something was sprayed.
WHAT can I do? I did pull up the seedlings and I have them soaking. The large plants were mature seedlings about to bloom! The REALLY sad thing, I had a bunch of seedlings growing in the ditch (in pots) it remains moist down there. I was doing a little experiment to see how they would grow. Those seedlings were triple the size of the ones I'd put in the ground, without fertilizer even. They were so healthy and tall. GRRR I'm so mad. Do you think they are lost? The mature seedlings I know are goners. The littler ones might have a chance. I did strip the leaves off. Should I cut them back?
Thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Although I can't help in saving the babies, I will say that you should have a sign put up in order to keep this from happening again. In fact you might need 2 signs facing in both directions. There is a lady here in town that has dayliles all on the edge of the road all along her property line and she has a sign up saying NO SPRAY! and DO NOT SPRAY! Seems to work for her.
Hope this helps.

forgot to add that I can well relate----I live in a rural farm community and they burn my flowers and have killed 5 corkscrew willows--*one was big*---and peach and plum trees...so far tho my fish have been fine, knock on wood.

Thank you everyone. What makes me CRAZY is the fact that last year that lot was one HUGE weed patch. Full of sand burs and all type of nasty weeds. Do you think they sprayed last season? Heck NO! I spent three days clearing that dang lot. I have vegtables and all types of flowers growing. Not to mention my beloved brugs. I'm going to ring the town up to see what they sprayed. I have green beans ready to pick- now I'm wondering if their safe to eat.

If you cut the seedlings back they may come back from the roots...

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Wow, you do have a problem. That is terrible. I think I would wash all brugs under water that you can. After getting any out of the sun, which ahould help, as that stuff works best with sun on plants, etc. I do not think I would chance eating the green beans until you find out what chemicals they sprayed.

This sure would take the fun out of trying to grow anything!

My Dad, years ago, lost a whole garden to that.
What a disappointment for you!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kristi, you have not had good luck this year. I'm so sorry. I really don't know what to do about the brugs, but would follow the advise above and hope that some will survive. What a shame, especially after all of your hard work. If you need cuttings this fall I can sure help you out then. Just E me.

Kristi so sorry to hear that this happened. When I was a teenager we had grapes, rows and rows of them. The county road crew would spray the weeds along the road and defoliate our grapes every year!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What a disaster! Did you call them? I can replace the ones I sent you Kritsi.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Iam so sorry!

Is it worth a shot to rince them well then lay them in a shallow furrow, cover them lightly with a loose soil and keep them just damp? At least prone, they would stand a better chance and maybe they would regenerate at the leaf nodes.
We so often hear from others about plants they put in the compost pile they found have come back later so maybe this is worth a shot.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Dat did you have RR tracks near, sometime they come down and spray, doubt I have any of the ones you may lose but let me know if I can get your collection back up.

Kristi, I am so sorry for you too ):

Is it lawful? I mean, couldn't pets be poisoned with that stuff too? Seems to me they could have warned you!

Thank you everyone for the advice and support. I'm so touched by all of your kind offers. Each and everyone of you bring a smile to my face.
I'm still trying to figure out what they sprayed. So far I've been given the run around.
I do have them soaking in a bucket of fish pond water. Ruth Ann- I'll try the method your talking about. Calla- did your grapes survive? Was it just the foliage that ended up damaged? Viola- I wish they would have notified about the spraying. I'm wondering if they were spraying for mosquitos? Thanks again everyone.

grrrrrrrrr that still stinks dangit :( -----

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Kristi, most of our grapes survived. I just remember mom would always get so mad when they would spray. I can send you some more seedlings if you want. I probably am cutting back some of the same brugs that were damaged, so if you send me a list, I'll see what I've got.
