I was just thinking about a man I met in Inuvik.
When I was just out of high school I worked up there
for 6 months and met a priest who had a greenhouse!
Now Inuvik would almost be Zone 0 but they do get
23 7/8 hours of sun in the summer-and in a greenhouse
he would get a season about as long as what I have.
Has anyone heard of people growing them way, way, way
up North? I worked there during the winter months so
saw the shortest day of the year-the sun never rose over
the horizon but the sky did have a glow for a few minutes.
He said he would get a nice crop of tomatoes etc.-people
there were amazed that he could do it!
Brugs in the Far North
I didn't think anything grew up there. I also would have thought that they would be a minus zone. I just googled and they do garden indoors. That's polar bear country.
That's why people thought so highly of him, being a priest
helped too-but his growing skills were well known throughout
the arctic! His church was shaped like an igloo, everyone,
no matter what their religion went there for Christmas Mass.
It was an experience I'll never forget!
There is a summer picture of Inuvik posted at:
http://www.town.inuvik.nt.ca/
Everything looks impressively green right now but the
green is really a type of pine tree that up close looks
like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. The town is next
to the Mackenzie River but the Polar Bears don't travel
this far west.
Forgot to mention the ground is always solidly frozen there
(permafrost) so growing anything there is truly miraculous!
At the bottom of Inuvik's home page you can click on
"tourism services" it links to a picture of the church
in the middle of the day!
That church is an IGLOO? My, oh, my, how wonderful!
what a beautiful church. thanks for sharing with us
You're welcome-not brugs I know but I thought of him
when I was out watering the brugs! Since they can't
dig into the permafrost all the buildings are built
on stilts and the pipes carrying water, etc. are
all above ground as well.
