Okay, not a butterfly, but a cool moth

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

This beautiful thing was flying around in the lights outside our church doors last Friday night. It was big, maybe 4" wide with its wings not quite fully extended. Any idea of what kind of moth this is?

Another angle. It was pretty cooperative, pretty tired.

Flash makes its colors look a little different. Check out those antennae!

Is it an imperial moth? http://www.ag.auburn.edu/dept/entplp/bulletins/imperialmoth/photo2.htm

Tokyo, Japan

Bingo! Eacles imperialis. Looks like yours is male (feathery antennae.)

Great closeup there - either you always tote around a tripod, or you've got the world's steadiest hands!!

LOL, Loph - no, my camera lens is exceptionally steady. It's an Olympus C-2100 with image stabilization; the zoom is a 10x optical, so the IS really makes a difference, especially when zoomed all the way in on things!

Hummmn, that link. Don't you think they'd like your photo better?

Tokyo, Japan

Wow!

Sounds like a really great camera K! (Not to minimalize the photographer's innate abilities of course...)

Do ya think, like... uhh, you know, like uhh, maybe - jus' fer a little bit, like; well, uh, you know... maybe like, yeah, uhhh, like y'know - uhh "borrow it"??????

If you lived closer, ummmmm, well, maybe, well....
You can get it for about $420 factory refurb on eBay, still. It's the only electronic thing I have which has actually maintained its value!

Thanks for that beautiful picture of a beautiful moth! I'll be watching around the lights!
