Justica

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

From Brugie. I just fell in love again with this flopsy mopsy pink blooming plant. Shirley gave me two of these when we were mailing out the elephant ears and they are both doing great. Love everything about the bloom, esp. that it is pink.

She shared with me too!I love it!the pink is great, mine got the top knocked over in a storm,so now it is blooming all up the side.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You are both ahead of me. I have lots of buds, but no blooms except on the yellow one. Very pretty Debby. Every year it will have more blooms and you can take cuttings all winter.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I got a Justica but my leaves don't look like that......

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

CC: Which one did you get.

Brugie: Oh,no, something else to hold over the winter!!!LOL.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I think its lavender,Calla sent it but it hasn't bloomed....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I had the lav. one Karyn and I believe it is a fall/winter bloomer. The blooms won't look like the one Debby posted either. It was a rather messy houseplant. I hope the one you have isn't what I had.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

There is NO HOPE!

I gotta get a good one!

I'm really dying for a red...is there a red?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yes, there is red. If mine will grow like it is supposed to, I'll try to get one rooted for you. I have yellow too. I like it.....very showy.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

All I know is I gotta have one that blooms like that first one...LOL

Thanks Shirley,I'll cross my fingers......

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Is it a Justica or something else??? Inquirying minds want to know!! I gotta get my hands on a plant just like that....totally awesome!!!

Gilmer, TX

Brugie, Is there really a red carnea??? Gotta have it. Took me two years to find the yellow one. It hasn't bloomed yet, but I now have two. The only other color I knew about was the white. I've taken and trade many cutting of my pink. You're right they root easily in cool weather but fizzle if trying to root in warm weather. If you know a source for the red, please post.

I don't take cuttings when it is warm because it has buds on every available place. In the winter, inside the house, they don't bud. I got mine, red and yellow, from http://www.almostedenplants.com/

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the link to that fantastic website. WOW, another terrific on-line web page for tropical plants!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Shirley, the plants I've received from this site have all been large and in great shape. I'm totally happy with ordering from them.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Bad,Bad Brugie!

No way am I clicking on anymore links till I get a bigger GH

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

CC, I've decided that if I can't hold them over, I'll just buy new ones next year. I don't have a greenhouse during the winter, so you can imagine the predicament I am in when fall arrives. You will like this site.......you better click. LOL!!

With the top knocked out of it,it keeps going.

Root: Looking good. Maybe I should cut the top off of mine. Yours is so much fuller.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Debby, it will get that way when you start taking cuttings this winter. If you whack on it now, you might not see anymore blooms this summer. I'd wait.

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Brugie: Got it. Another plant to take inside. I planted them in the ground. Should I dig up the plant this fall or take cuttings.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You can do both. I generally keep one in a pot to take inside for winter cuttings and plant some in the ground to just let go. I wouldn't dig it until you have to and at that time, take a couple of cuttings in case the plant doesn't take well to being dug.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Just had a freak ten minute storm blow through, now I am down to 2 blooms, sure doesn't like wind.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If it broke off right, you will get two blooms in place of that one that you lost. They always put out two more just at the base of the middle one, so when you deadhead, be careful not to take the new ones off. Hope you got some rain with the wind.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Not enough to cover the whole road,it was blowing through too quick, should I remove the bloom from the stalk that broke and try to root it,or do you think it is too hot?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If you have enough of the stalk to work with, yes, root it. The Justicia usually root well in a glass of water. Just put it in the house where it gets light, but not sun. Should work.

PS Debbie, I like the backdrop of your picture better than mine.

I have one in the garden that is blooming. Actually, a pink and a yellow are blooming. The potted one on the front deck is very big and has many buds on it. I'll post a picture when it is in its glory. Nice picture Arlene.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Thanks Brugie, will phone you today. I may be coming through Wed with your pots and wanted to check to see what hours you will be around.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Hey, I can't get the site to open. Can't wait to see what they've got for my tropical yard!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I just checked and they are updating their site right now. Give it some time and check back. They do have some nice stuff.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Got to Almost Eden Plants this morning. Holy Cow am I in trouble now!!! I've got friends in DeRidder, Oleo Acres daylilies and I go there fairly frequently. I'll have to stop by. In the meantime, I'm ordering the snail vine, Phaseolus giganteus, and maybe one of the passion vines. I love odd vines. I had a thunbergia grandiflora at my other house and it grew to 50-75' in all directions and was absolutely gorgeous.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Oh, yeah, and the yellow justica and a variegate cup of gold vine.....sigh....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yep, you are in trouble. I love that place and will definitely order from them again in the spring. Have fun. Wish I could see it in person.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Just a couple of days ago, I bought this plant from the nursery. I loved the colour too. There is also the yellow-blooming plant which I will bring in a few days. They are so pretty. When I looked at its details, I found how easy it is to propagate from cuttings.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Dinu, there is a bright red also. I have the yellow, pink, and red and last year I had the white and the Pink Radiant which is different from the regular pink. I didn't really care for it though. The white wouldn't grow well for me, so I gave it to a friend. The red one I have this year has a bud, but it doesn't seem to want to open. The yellow as bloomed like crazy. I love justicia. Almost care free.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

I actually meant the pink one like the one rootdoctor's picture above, not the red. I want to put it in the ground. Does it do well there?

California, MD(Zone 7a)

This is a picture of the red one.

Welllll, it's REAL dark Pink, anyhoo!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I could live with that!LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

There is a red one also. It borders on being more of a red/orange color, but at first glance looks red. It gets very tall, like about 4+ ft. I found my red and my yellow at Almost Eden last year. The yellow bloomed nicely, but the red didn't bloom until a couple of weeks ago and in the basement. I love Justicia plants. Here is a picture of the yellow, but it really is much better looking in person and when the blooms are a bit more fresh.
