Plant in spring or fall???

I was just told that planting fruit trees in the fall doesn't allow them to produce a root system, and they often die or get dieback. Is this true? I'm talking apples, peaches, necatarines, grapes, kiwis etc etc etc.
Thanks. I was planning to plant around leaf fall this year.

I've done both, to my notion they're better off if planted as early as you can in the spring.

My dad was a farmer who did everything "by the moon" and to his notion you could plant a tree in any month that contained an R...

I've had decent luck planting trees in September and October... depending on the severity of the winter... and to my dad's credit, I've had peach trees and cherry trees die that were planted in MAY.... go figure.

R's, that's really neat. Thanks for that. It seems to be May that the ground dries out a bit, that might be it.

Dennis, Most of the orchardists in this area plant trees in the spring. When we were operating our orchard we always planted in the spring, so that is my suggestion. Donna
