Here a moth which tried today to hide itself on the fabric of a chair in my office.
Need some help in ID of this moth. Wingspan is about 4". My two family guesses are Sphingidae or Cossidae.
I first thought that it might be a Carolina Sphinx but the bands on the sides of the body on this one are white not yellow.
I'll post a few more shots.
Moth trying out it's camouflage
I'm kind of lost when it comes to moths, but it looks like some kind of a sphinx.
Is the last photo of the same moth?
It's some sort of sphinx moth, and it looks like a Carolina to me. Remember there is a lot of variation from one animal to another. What they show and describe in the guide books is a "typical" individual. Where's Bugguy??? He could almost certainly help us here...Hey, Bugguy! Help!
Yes Paintedlady the last picture is also from the same moth.
Thats the good thing with a nightflying moth, they stay put when photos are taken and don't have to hunt them down.
Finally found the name of the moth, it's a Great Ash Sphinx (sphinx chersis).
What did you find the name in? Is there a moth ID book?
Well I have some moth in my book but this one wasn't included.
But there is a USGS site for north american moth and thats where I found it in.
