What do you do with chickens in winter?

rural, WY(Zone 3a)

And also 'barn' cats? I just bought .89 acre, there's an unheated barn, and tiny house. I'd like to have chickens, just a few for eggs. And I'm not a cat person, just dogs mainly, but I would love to pick up a couple nasty uglies from the pound, the ones nobody else wants, and give them a better life. BUT I don't really want them in my house. What does everyone do? Should I scrap the cat dream? Do chickens adapt to cold or do they need heated winter area? Thanks, sorry for any ignorance.
