If water lily leaves stick up out of the water....

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

is that normal or does it mean they are too crowded or something else?? Most of mine are huge and floating, but on some of my newer smaller ones, they are sticking up about four inches out of the water.

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Mine have done that too...they eventually find their way to the water.

The problem is those water hyasinths (sp) thingys you got. See!!! I told you so!!!! It's either that or there's a child under the water holding the leaf up trying desperatly to get your attention. And you're ignoring her!!! Shame shame shame.....

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

OOps ... I better come out from under that water lily ... I've been found!

Darnit! Need a better hiding place....

*LOL*

LOL Just like an apple off the old tree! Or is that a nut off the old tree? Hmmmmmmmmmm. LOL I do have a bunch of lilies potted on the shelves and figured maybe they were crowded. I do finally have like 99% water coverage. That is a good thing right???

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Who you calling a nut? And you better explain this "old tree" stuff.. Well.....I never.....humph....

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

NutS? Where?! What KinD?! I like nuts! Peanuts? Cashews? Pecans?

LOL .... Honestly, I have NO clue why the lilies aren't keeping low to the water surface, but I've had fun pretending ....

:)

Furthermore....Jennifer....I told you NOT to go swimming in "her" pond. Geez....
**giggle**

Yes, that's a good thing. Just so there's room for your fish to surface now and then. If you get too many floaters use them for mulch. Your plants will thank you.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

ROTFLOL I think I was just un-adopted! I could go for some cashews right now. Guess I better grab the weed whacker and forget that idea!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Your lily leaves are probably sticking up because they're crowded and jockeying for sunlight. You might need to divide the ones that are the worst 'offenders'. You can also try some judicious pruning. You can prune up to a third off without causing any problem. Prune off the old ones to give the new ones a chance.

Hi Badseed
I agree your plants need a bit of pruning and dividing.
Ponds should have about 75% coverage-it gives the fish
and oxygenators a chance.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I have one yellow that the leaves just naturally stick out of the water...almost lotus like..

I'd take a picture but I still can't get at my programs...or email........

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

I got mine from Hawaii and some leaves stick out of the water.... :o)

If the leaves on the shelves are the ones sticking up, they may not be deep enough.
