Hi Everyone! I have a black calla lily growing in a pot. I lost all growing info on it and now can't find it on the web! Is anyone else growing this one? It is my first Calla. Do I plant it in shade or sun? Currently it is receiving full sun and growing slowly. Sue
Black Calla Lily
Sue,
Calla Lillies are shade loving plants. The reason that yours is growing slowly is that it is receiving to much sun. Try to move it to a shadier location and keep it moist. I think you will be happy with the results and the beautiful blooms.
BTW, what is the name of your variety of Calla Lily? Let me know if you're interested in swapping.

Hi Shirley, it is called 'Naomi Campbell' (named after the famous model?) and I think I got it from Parkseed.Com. It was the tiniest thing when I planted it and now it is sending up 5 or 6 stalks about 6" high. I'm kind of amazed, as I did not expect much growth in the first year. But then again, I've never grown Callas!
Would be happy to share with you at some point. I'm not sure when or how to divide?
I'm moving this to the shade garden tomorrow, along with my Astilbe who is absolutely crisping in the sun these days. I'm still a newbie.......
Crestedchik, what's the saying, sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees. I absolutely forget about the Plants Data base at times. Thank you!

Calla Lily
(Zantedeschia)
Description
This South African native is a very popular florists' flower. Plants have a thick rhizome and produce attractive arrowhead shaped leaves. Flowers come in shades of white, yellow and pink. Expect blooms in spring and early summer.
Uses
Smaller varieties make nice houseplants. Outdoors, they look good in mass plantings or in clumps. Use callas in areas that are too wet for other bulbs.
Planting
Calla lilies are popular greenhouse plants, and are easily grown in regular potting mix. Outdoors, they prefer a moist location with light shade. Plant the rhizomes 4 inches deep and 12 inches apart and sidedress monthly with bulb fertilizer. They are not hardy outdoors if the temperature drops below 30 degrees F, but they can be lifted in the fall and replanted in the spring when cold temperatures have passed.
Calla lilies make great housplants if a sunny window is available, although they may need a little protection from the sun at midday. They do best in night temperatures of 50° to 65° and day temperatures of 68° or higher. Plant the tubers in early fall, setting them 3 inches deep in the potting mixture. Keep barely damp until the first shoot appears, then keep moist and feed monthly with a bulb fertilizer. All except Z. aethiopica need a period of dormancy after flowering; gradually withhold water until the leaves wither away. Start plants into growth again later by moistening the soil.
Propagate by dividing the tubers in late summer or early fall; seedlings usually bloom during the second year.

Black eyed Beauty is gorgeous! Thank you for the information Shirley, I have saved it for future reference. I have moved the pot to shade and will plant later because there are just not enough hours in the day! LOL! The stalks continue to grow and I can't wait to see what the flowers will look like. :-D
I want to purchase some black callc lillies any one know where thanks
Any place on-line that sells bulbs will also carry Calla Lilies. An excellent source is Brent & Becky's Bulbs.
