Secret iris trade?

Dudley, MA(Zone 5b)

I was thinking of having a secret iris trade if there was enough interest. This would be my first secret trade that I organized so please feel free to make suggestions.

This would be a trade for unnamed bearded iris, although I could probably have a separate one for named varieties also.

Maybe we could list suggestions for colors you might like (or don't want) and I could include it with the mailing address when I give it to your trader? I know some people have websites with pictures of their garden and I could also include that URL in the email to give your trader so they could get an idea of what you've got and don't send something you already have.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Please post here so I can decide if there is enough interest to organize a secret trade.

Thanks,
Karen

I have some tall bearded purple iris here that are un-named
just because I was too dumb to keep the name. They are 3-4 years old so probably due to be divided. Can you do that in the Fall?

TwinLakesChef, Iris are best divided in July or August, definitely no later than Spetember 15, so they can get established before the cold weather. 3-4 years is time to divide!

It looks like there is interest in a secret trade. Cool! I will start a new thread tomorrow to actually sign up for it.

Do you think giving everyone a week to sign up is long enough or should I have it longer?

I thought that the trade should be for at least 2 rhizomes (or maybe 3?) to make it worth the postage. Or some other amount??? They could be the same or all different colors. Let me know your opinion on this.

I think I will do a combined unnamed and named iris trade. You would be able to sign up for one trade of each and then I will match you up to other people in the same category.

Please let me know your opinions and then I will start the sign up thread tomorrow.

Karen, maybe even 6 or more! Once you start dividing, there are many rhizomes. Shipping should not be expensive, as the Iris are shipped dry (not wrapped in damp towels or anything); this revents rot of the rhizomes. One other thing people do is to write the name of the variety on the leaves with a sharpie or other 'magic' marker. Hope this helps. John

I'm in!!

I've been shipping 3-4 rhizomes and it's running anywhere from 4.00-7.00 parcel post. If I ship 6 It's going to be a considerable amount of postage.

I've found in all my experiences with ebay that at this time of the year, pp and priority get there within the same amount of time. I think with this trade PP would be acceptable.

will the trade be for any type of iris or bearded iris only? I like dutch iris and minis too!

Please see the new "secret iris trade" thread to sign up.

I am going to stick with just bearded iris to keep trades more "even" and less confusing to organize. I could always run another one at some point for additional types of iris if there is interest and this one goes well.

Melissa-are you talking about plain rhizomes or clumps of rhizomes? That seems really heavy. Did you trim the foliage? I weighed 3 large rhizomes in a Priority Box #4 and it was only 14oz so it would only be $3.85 for Prioroty shipping.

LOL, yes, I trimmed the foliage.

I must just have heavy rhizomes.
