Abyssian banana

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Just read that this banana will not make pups; must be propagated from seeds. I sure hate that, cause I am not sure it will be hardy here in my zone 8B, and I had hoped to take up the baby nanas. Looks like I will be digging a big big nana.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Mine made pups.......last year.....unless is was the wrong one....

I had bought the seeds on e-bay and after 2 years I got pups.....but it was potted

Thanks, Suzie. An article in our local paper , written by Norman Winter, the auther of the first article, who is from here, said it would not make babies, and would freeze. I guess if it does make babies, I would not have a mama nana anymore! They say that is what happens when the other nanas bloom, but I don't really know cause it makes so many babies that grow to be big nanas that I do not miss any that dies; plus mine have not bloomed in a few years. I think I read that they have to grow for 18 months before they bloom and make fruit; we have had plenty before but not in the last few years.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I think I read that somewhere too Roz, though they have some newer varieties out that make fruit in less time. One of the tropical places lists months of frost free time needed to fruit......cant remember which one. Maybe Dee will come along and help us out!
