Here is a lone A marlothii showing some bare trunk and the typical spiny leaves of this heavy plant. This one in is Pasadena, California

Common name: Flat-flowered Aloe
Family: Aloeaceae
Genus: Aloe

It's considered a tree aloe, but not sure what the cut off for being a shrub versus a tree is
