Mexican Petunia, Hardy Petunia 'Mexican Carpet' (Ruellia brittoniana)

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

The leaves on this short variety are very attractive. These plants could use more sunshine to increase flower production.

Thanks for comment, CD. I didn't know there were pink and white flowering varieties.

The flowers (all colors) are beautiful. Mine are in a flower bed where they get a half day's sun and they bloom heavily. They like a lot of water, but when they are in the ground instead of a pot, they don't need nearly as much. When they start to get dry, the get a little wilted, then perk up shortly after being watered. The are very brittle, and can be broken by a water hose or stepping around them when it seems you barely touched them. For me, they do better if rooted in water; when put directly in the ground they lose all their leaves and look like the are dead. They will eventually come up, though.

I was told they did well in shade, and planned to put some in a small fenced-in garden that's all shade. Do they bloom at all in shade?

This is Ruellia brittoniana 'Katie' or Katie's Ruellia -a dwarf variety. I love mine, although it can move around a bit...
