Jacob's Ladder 'Brise d'Anjou' (Polemonium caeruleum)

Piedmont, MO(Zone 6a)

It seems I have to grow this in a pot to keep the slugs and snails from obliterating it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Your plant is so beautiful. when is have any problem with slugs I sprinkle dried egg shells crumbled all around the base of the plant and jar lids of beer near by to lure them and drown the little suckers. Good luck..

My neighbor has a sweet gum tree and she uses the pointy seed pods to keep the slugs away (it can also deter cats, rabbits, etc.). The pods are so sharp they hurt critter's paws and slugs don't seem to like to crawl over them either. You can mulch a bed with them or just surround individual plants. Since she has to rake them up anyway, she figures she might as well put them to good use, and she is kind enough to share them with me. That's a good neighbor!!

NoH2O..what a good idea for you. We don't have those trees here I don't think. At least I have never seen them. I surrounded one of my favorite Hosta with pine cones..hoping that woudl help.
I have had some good luck with Safer's Slug and Snail bait.
Toxic..that is a beautiful healthy plant..I have one in my Hosta garden. So far it is ok..no holes. Here we have to mulch them well over the winter in our zone 5a.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I will try the eggshells for now, and collect some sweetgum fruits next time I see a lot (hope they don't sprout). Starzz, I think you have the pretty plant! I will keep in mind the heavy mulch for this winter. Thanks again!

Slugs and snails what a problem when camping we put SALT around our tent and they dry up or turn away so I guess it just might work also

I have huge slugs. They chewed up my dwarf dahlias. Last year I dug holes and sunk peanut butter jars full of beer near the stuff they liked best. They love it, they crawl down into the jar to drink the beer, get drunk and drown happy. They can't get out again because they are too soused.

I don't know if my DH would let me use beer like that! He might turn into a slug and crawl in...hmm, there is some truth in the comparison...LOL.
Actually, I finally resorted to handpicking slugs early in the morning (before 6 am) wherever I see their handiwork appear. Gross, but extremely effective.
I lost the 'Brise d'Anjou' to some pest....turned out to be some type of stem borer.
