I just realized that my only brug pod has began to change colors, it is a bit softer where the brown area is, but the rest is still firm. How much longer should I wait to collect the seeds? I'd also would like to know what is the best way to do it, this is my first time collecting the seeds, so I don't want to mess up.
Thanks,
Olga
Pod ready to be harvested?
sorry umm I dont know---just didnt want your post to be lonely :)
How long has it been hanging there? If it hasn't been there for about three months, I'd just tie a piece of panty hose around that pod and not worry about it. It will eventually fall and you won't lose the seeds with them tied up. You will also know they are totally ripe. Most people pick them when the peduncle (stem) is yellow. The pod itself can be turning color or still green, but usually will feel softer when you squeeze it a bit because the seeds are ripe and can move around inside. Hope this helps you a bit.
This pod is so small, I wonder if something happened to interrupt its growth. I had a few like that. They just stopped growing and rotted then fell off way too soon.
I should have said that different crosses will take different amounts of time for the pods to ripen. Please don't think that all will be ready at three months. Sorry!!
maybe the pod is not so small..................LOL!
Kell, it does look smaller than most and it looks like it is starting to brown. This one may be ready to pick or maybe it will be no good. Guess that Olga will have to determine what to do next. We all have to learn and I lost some pods due to being in too big of a hurry last year.
Thanks for all the responses. The pod is 3 inches or so long, and that I know of, it has been on the plant for at least 2 and a half months, but I'm not sure since I did not discover it until I started to prune my brug, and it was already that size. The stem has started to yellow a bit, but shows no sign of wanting to fall off. I will probably try the pantyhose idea just to be sure I don't loose the seeds, I guess it is worth it to try even if the seeds are no good.
Regards,
Olga
really, just try it. nothing to lose if you try the pantyhose. Keep an eye on it, they go fast in the end. I had some that zoomed to shriveled and gone so fast I missed out. What is the cross?
I have no idea what cross it is. I have no named brugs, only those I've received from friend's cuttings and others I grew from seed, mostly white, but also some pink and yellow. I know this is going to sound very amateurish, but I just tried to cross pollinate all my plants when they were all blooming, so the parentage is also a mystery :)
We all are amateurs on here Olga, just some more advanced in their amateurism than others! LOL. Just have fun. That is the only hard and fast rule!
