Since my brugs were beaten down by a felled tree, I enjoyed looking at my other flowers today.

Hi B, nice assortment there! Are the varigated foliage (white and green) gingers or hostas? My tropicals are loving all this heat and rain we've been getting. All my other plants are rotting but the tropicals are doing great!
Justme, the variegated foliage is hosta. I came back from a 2 week vacation and found my tropicals flourishing and annuals rotting--Had my auto sprinklers to come on 2x day + all the rain.
Are you the ginger person from thibodaux that I was going to trade with?
yes, that would be me :-). My gingers have all waken up and are starting to bloom. I went to a ginger seminar a couple of weekends ago. Tim Chapman spoke, he has been around the world collecting gingers. He had slides of many gingers that I never knew existed. He had collected ginger seeds from all across Asia, rode elephants through the jungles seeking exotics that we've never seen before. His pictures were incrediable. He had some of his collection up for sale, I bought 4 very small plants from him and his book. Needless to say, I was awe struck..lol
Lisa? Got any tips you'd like to share on the gingers? How much food do they like? Do they need to be a certain height before blooming? I have "white butterfly" that is at least 5' with no blooms yet.
(just can't wait to see and smell em)
Thanks! Vi
Vi, mine are just putting out a few pods and beginning to bloom. They usually bloom a little later for me, but will keep on til frost. But I do have lots and lots of them. Mine are anywhere from 5 to 7 feet now.
Justme, I have tim's book. Wish I had know about his talk. Contact me when you are ready to trade. Would be interested in knowing what you bought from Tim. I am headed to Baton Rouge soon and hope to find him home.
Vi, The white butterfly gingers have not started setting pods yet. Later in summer before they bloom. Have other varieties that are blooming now.
A beautiful picture Barbara, I'd love to see a photo tour of your garden. You seen to grow everything and it is so well coordinated.
Love the colors!!

v.bird, Gingers benefit from any kind of tropical food with the make up of 24-8-16. It should be water soluble and without boron or very low in boron. Is your butterfly ginger in medium to full sun? They like sun. They do get taller than 5 feet, so it might still be growing.
Barb, I bought from Tim: S.Rainbow, Pink Pearls, C.Voilet and Twice as Nice. Tim's place is about an hours drive from my house. I will be going to visit him very soon..there was more I wanted to buy, but hubby was with me..and well, you know how that goes....haha! I have my want list in hand, just need to find someone to drive me there..there is a very tall bridge I have to cross to get there and it is under repairs, I can't drive over it.I am terrified! LOL--but maybe..for the the sake of gingers...hmmm....
Justme, send me your want list. I may have some of them. Do you have any brugs, gingers or ee to trade? I am getting rid of my Kaempherias--not hardy enough here and I need my gh for brugs.
Forgot to mention, no brugs here, I nail 'em faster than you can believe. They don't like all our rain.
Your garden looks just great Barb and I love your plants Lisa.
Thanks Kell. Lisa, is that a kaempferia in the middle, if so, what variety.
Barb, the middle is sort of a Kae. it was first thought to be Kae., but then reclassified as a Cornukaempferia. It is Cornukaempferia aurrantiflora "Jungle Gold".
None of my gingers have bloomed yet, except the Butterfly ginger and it has been blooming for two weeks now. This is sorta early , but I guess all the rain helped this. In fact, none of my gingers have bloomed cause they are still in pots newly planted. Lisa, are you still interested in a Lady Palm? I noticed that mine has a baby sticking out of the pot. Your Canary Island date palm is really growing. Also I have an extra Washingtonia palm, it is little, but fast grower.
Hey Roz, I have a couple of Lady Palms..it was the Fox Tail Palm that I was wanting. I saw some in New Orleans a while back and put them on my "must have list". I am glad your Canary Is. is doing so well. I love those palms, they are my favorite of the Palms.
Roz, if lisa doesn't need the palm, I would love to have it.
Okay, Barb, will put your name on it.
Lisa, I have a foxtail palm; we got it in Key West two years ago, and I also got a triangle palm, and a Christmas Palm, but the Christmas palm could not take the gh and died. Did you see the foxtail palm in New Orleans in a pot or was it in the ground? I am afraid it would not make it in the ground, but sure would like to plant it; maybe it would make babies.
Roz, the Fox Tail was in a huge pot, it was at Perino's. I don't think they are hardy here. Maybe in New Orleans (being the city and warm air off Lake Ponchatrain) But were I am we tend to get a few degrees colder than N.O.
