Where did you get this beautiful plant? I keep buying eryngium alpinums from various sources and they always turn out to be eryngium planum. So now I have a lot of eryngium planums and a lot of frustration. I wish I could find an accurate source for this.
Do you live in the UK? We sell it at the garden centre where I work.
Unfortunately I live thousands of miles away in the US. (I love living in the US, I just say unfortunately because it is so far away from the plant I want!). Now that I have the name of a specific variety maybe I will have better luck in getting the right plant. Thanks for your help!
Thats a shame you live in the USA (living so far from this supply that is!). I think there are a few varieties of this species with perhaps 'Amethyst' and the very blue variety 'Blue Star' being one of the best.
'Amethyst' and 'Blue Star' - two plants that I will put on my must have list. So you work at a garden centre...do you spend your entire paycheck there? I think it would be deadly for me to work at a place that sells plants - like putting an alcoholic to work at a brewery! Plant collecting is my addiction; I would never be able to resist the temptation.
I agree. Luckily (or unluckily) my current garden is not that large and is completely full of plants. Mmmm...there's still a bit of space in the fron garden though!
NoH2O--Joy Creek Perennials carries 'Blue Star' but is sold out...maybe you can try them next year. Good Garden Watchdog comments too!

NoH2o,
I just purchased 3 of these from Hortus Botanicus.com. You'll find them in the Garden Watchdog. Mine haven't bloomed yet ( it takes at least a year for the plants to settle in), but I'm fairly confident that they've sent me the correct one. I also grow the planums so I know what you mean.
Try Hortus - I ended up with a lot of babies along with the larger roots - very healthy and extremely well packaged for shipping
