Welcome to epi2003

Crossville, TN

Folks, say hello to epi2003.....from Redmond, WA. I saw her in garden foes and invited her to come over here and introduce herself. I know she will find help in that forum....but I only know about critters like Javalinas. Jo

Welcome from your southwestern Washington neighbor. You will thoroughly enjoy this garden and its gardeners.

Welcome to DG, epi2003! I think this is the best community on the Web, bar none. Glad you joined!

Hi, Everyone,
I am a novice gardener and I am really glad that I found Dave's Garden!
I really like fragrant plants. I get the name epi because I would like to grow epiphyllum someday. But right now I don't own any epi :p. The recent additions to my small yard include 3 gardenia and 1 red/white honeysuckle. Now both the gardenia and honeysuckle are blooming and I am very excited about it!
I am having some trouble with my wintersweet recently. I posted the details in the 'garden foes' forum. I hope that some of you can help me identifying the problem.
Thanks!

epi, Tell me about wintersweet.

Redmond, WA(Zone 9a)

It is a double wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox 'Concolor') which I planted this spring. Recently it started to show some stressed symptoms: the leaves are yellowing, and the yellowed leaves have black veins. Eventually they fade to almost white, become very brittle and fall off. Can someone here tell me if this is a pest problem or a physiological problem? And how can I correct them?

I can't help you with your wintersweet, but welcome to DG, from South Louisiana.
Our gardenia bloomed the whole month of May, as it always does. Heavenly scent - overwhelming at it's peak. Dependable, gorgeous, evergreen, and wonderfully scented, gardenias are a dream plant. : )

I mean what is a wintersweet? Is it a bush? Like a Daphne?

Redmond, WA(Zone 9a)

Hi, Anastasia,
This wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) is a decidous broadleaf shrub. It will bloom yellow flowers on bare stems from Jan-March. And the scent is heavenly!
I found a couple of pictures on the web.

There is another wintersweet, but I am not sure of its latin name. It also blooms early spring, featherly yellow flowers, but doesn't smell as good as Chimonanthus. This other wintersweet is more common though, I think.
