The photo is of a Black Swallowtail chrysalis. See how the color matches the plant. I have seen them making an all green chrysalis to match green leafs, and various browns or grey to match sticks.
Does anybody know how the caterpillar is able to do that?
Not a clue, but it sure is cool.
What kind of plant is it on?
It's a Salvia Black and Silver. Something new I recently found at a nursery. The parsley plant it was feeding on is about 10 yards away.
The only ones I've seen have been green but I think the way they anchor themselves is very cool!
I had some B S cats in an aquarium (dry) last year. The sticks that I had in it where brown and they matched the color of the chrysalis perfectly to them, one was hanging on the black lid, it was black. I had one cat on an all green plant and the chrysalis was green. Now this guy is on a plant with a whitish stem and the chrysalis is whitish facing the stem and green like the leafs on the other side.
I just wonder how in the world they can do that.
