MY BISMARCK APPEARS MORE GREEN THAN BLUE..IT WAS MORE BLUE WHEN IT WAS PLANTED 4 MONTHS AGO...I PLANTED IT IN BOCA RATON...IT IS ABOUT 10 FT.TALL AND IT WAS IN ABOUT A 50GAL. POT...WHAT DO YOU MEAN ...SEE HOW BLUE IT GETS...WILL MY PALM GET MORE BLUE...THANK YOU
Not at this point . you obviously have the green variety. It would have turned blue LONG before now if it was going to ever. You fortunately live in a climate where green varieties are very happy, and will probably grow faster even than the blue forms. If you wanted blue, get one that is already (at the 50 gallon size it should already be a pale blue-silver... at the 1 gal size it's a lot harder to tell, but the more purple it is, the bluer it will be as it ages).
I'm a newbie here - found the site through looking for small tress, esp. palms, and esp. blue/silver palms and palms that move a lot in the breeze (?feather? - I'm still very new at this), that I can obtain for growing in zone 8B Texas black gumbo... this climate and soil are completely new and strange to me ;)
Anyhoo, Palmbob, your pics are excellent - do you have a book published? If so, please email me the title and so on, pterochromics@earthlink.net, Thanks!
Only booklet is Palms for Southern California which you can get through the IPS (International Palm Society) web site (ips.org). But it may not pertain much to your climate. Try Brahea armata... will probably do well for you.
Thanks, Palmbob, for the pics of such a majestic specimen. Would you know how old the tree is? I live in the Philippines and have an orchid and ornamental plant farm as well as a tree farm. As of this moment, I've collected around 20 Bismarck palms around 4feet high, no show of trunk yet. Fronds are not as silver blue as this pic, but not green. Hope they grow to be silver blue. Thanks
We are having 4 Bismarks delivered in 2 days. They are in 30 gal pots. I cannot seem to find out how far apart to plant them. What would be the minimum distance? Would they look good say, 8 feet apart?
Denise
so not hardy in zone 8b?
super marginal in that zone... I would say not hardy there, but if it makes it to semi-adulthood it might be OK
so do u think if i protect it in juvenile years it could survive when it grew more mature? thnxx
