Wish I lived around the corner. Then I would send Lene for a trip to Bahamas, so I would have no trouble, before I could pick up a cocker *lol* I had an american cocker a few years back and he was so intense in his was to love people that I have never met anything like him before or after. However, I am trying to talk Lene into breeding Tcheckkoslovacian wolf dogs or sarloos wolf dogs later on. This breed is so cute. They have been used as rescue dogs as it was impossible to train them as guard dogs, but they have so strong instincts that they neither guard or attack (compassion always winn over the anger and the will to kill)

Other than davesgarden members of course, I would be very careful of giving the puppies away for 'free'. Even a minimal charge of $50 would make someone stop and think about whether they could realistically take on the responsibility. I once had six puppies which I offered for free to people at work who promised good homes. In a couple weeks, 5 of the 6 had already been given away again. This is difficult on the puppy... Reasons? One lived in an apt. complex where dogs were not permitted (unknown to me beforehand). Another and the worst: a father HAD TO HAVE one for his son, and for his nephew (a Professional man). When the son found out the ears would not stand up right away, did not want the dog and his father allowed him to give it away, and bought him a new dog. The son's cousin followed suit.

I have found since then that a small fee hurts the wallet enough to make people think before grabbing at freebies.

Best wishes,

John

I find that families who already have dogs (and look after them!!!) provide the best homes for puppies!

stopped by the bank and brought them in--I have given them all away--one lady had a 14 year old poodle---so I think she is going to take care of it it--*course the poodle might be irritated:( the other lady had an inside yorkiepoo/chihahaha (SP?) mix *bet that was strange looking lol and she took two--one for her and one for her granddaughter. they all promised heartworm meds and fenced yards ect. both ladies are older and seem like stable responsible ppl. I hope I didnt offend anyone by offering these puppies:S--it wasnt my intention. I just hate to put up a puppy sign because ppl around here in the country tend to let them get hit by cars or get heartworms or tie them up and so on.

I agree with John. We took 1.500 danish crowns (a little more than 200 $) each pup. That was to secure that the new owners was serious about having the pup and not just for the weekend :) There is a word that says easy come easy go, but the higher price one pays for puppie, the higher value it will have to them and the better they care and providefor it.

No offense taken, just sharing my personal experience which still sickens me years later. The price of the dog is nothing compared to proper care over the years, and it just seems people place more value on something they pay for. Glad to hear they are all in good homes :-)

Tonny, well said!

Pardancanda, we did that with our rabbits too. I would never give them away, even if the fee was only $5-$10, it made the kids think about it before saying they wanted a bunny(I worked with 4-H kids). The 4-H leader before me had stressed not just giving them away and gave the same reasons as mentioned above. If it costs something, they tend to take better care of it.

Thanks, Calalily! Works with rabbits too! BTW, I once rescued three dwarf bunnies from a flea market and really enjoyed them as pets.
