I started something like 600 seedlings, larkspur, giant zinnias, cleome (some cherry red), giant marigolds and few others and due to the rainy season we had (3 solid months of nothing but rain and cold this spring) I only have about 2 zinnias and 3 cleome and nothing else coming up in my cutting beds. I used up every bit of seed I harvested last fall and may not have any to harvest this year.
Hopefully with this sunshine something else will come up.
Getting Worried
rain has set me way back this year too. I'm still trying to get some things into the ground.
Maybe you should try Walmart or the dollar store for the 10-center packs. They usually have tons of zinnias and cosmos.
The same thing happened to me -- I finally went out and bought the cleome. Was debating throwing some zinnea and cosmos seeds out in the flowerbed -- is it too late??
It's kinda late but I'd bet you'd still get some blooms. Things planted late tend to catch up fast because it's so warm.
Haighr, let me check but I bet I still have lots of harvested zinnia seed from last year. Are you interested?
I planted FLATS full of hardy Hibiscus, which by now would normally be huge plants in one gallon pots. I have exactly 6 tiny seedlings which only now sprouted. That's what 2 months of COLD and wet weather will do, now I know!
Gee, John, that is so tough, I am really sorry for you guys with all the wet, I can certainly understand the frustration. It doesn't usually totally dry out here till Independence Day but no so this year. Hang in there. Bert told me it had been drought for 6 years there in Atlanta but they were receiving tons of rain this spring/summer too.
Thanks Len, I'll let you know, perhaps I can pick some up at the nursery.
Candee, I have some Cosmos and Marigold seeds that I can send you that you can direct sow right now, and they will bloom this year.
"eyes"
That would be great "eyes", but I don't have a thing to trade. How about a SASE to you and Lenjo?
Send your SASE. girlfriend, and I'll look around and see what else I can come up with too!!
"eyes"
Thanks so much could you e-mail your addy???
Alyssum, I was discussing this (sowing zinnias late) in another thread http://davesgarden.com/t/386925/. I think it might work for other fast growing annuals like cosmos and calendula. The cosmos may not get quite as tall as they usually do, but hey - maybe you wouldn't have to stake them.
NoH20 -- Thanks for the link -- I think I'll plant them today.
haigr--just started collecting seeds this year, but I'd be happy to provide you with seeds if you have a bad year this year. Just started collecting my larkspur (pink) and have some marigold but they aren't the giants. You're welcome to anything I have. Brenda
Hi, Haighr: So sorry to hear of your bad luck with planting seeds. Ironically, I started a flat of cleome mix, and they don't seem to like our wet cool weather. I start all my seeds indoors, so they are not subject to the outdoor weather. I think I also have seed for cleome... don't know about larkpur.
Haighr, Got marigold, cleomes, larkspurs and others. If interested, give me your address. Doris
Thanks Doris, would love some cleome and larkspur will e-mail addy.
I have lots of seeds so if there is anything you are looking for let me know and I will gladly sase them to you. Please email me as I have been busy and do not get to Dave's much lately. I have a fairly large selection and would be happy to help out.
Thanks everyone again. Think I've got it covered with your help. Much appreciated.
Thanks everyone, thanks to you guys I got a "ton" of seeds and such variety. You guys are "lifesavers".
Just bringing this forward to thank you all again. The seeds just kept coming and coming and I again want to thank all of you for your generosity.
They should germinate nice and fast, I have some nice little seedlings all over my garden.
I sure hope so.
