I was about to remove the pot from the pond bottom because nothing had happened when we suddenly had a heat wave and all of the sudden up popped my very first lily pad! But it is only about 3" long and maroonish in color. Is this normal? Will the pad change color as it makes cloriphyl and turn green? will it get larger or is it just that it was stressed by it's trip and it will send out larger leaves later?

WooooHoooooooooo, and it's a nice look one at that! It's normal. The pads will get bigger and greener as the lily grows. Some pads stay red underneath and may be speckled with red on the top side too, depends on the lily. Which one is that?
It was a gift and is an unknown white. I was so scared it had died that this wee little leaf literally had me jumping with joy :~)
