Best potting soil for Brugs?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Since I've joined DG, I've learned a bit about Brugs, and have totally fallen in love w/them, however, am confused as to what type of soil to use in the pot. I haven't rec'd any yet, but intend to use Miracle-Gro Encriched Potting Soil. Is this a good choice?

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

I make my own potting medium, and it seems to work good for brugs. I use 2 parts peat moss, 1 part each of sand and compost. Mix together, and pot! :>) I got the "recipe" out of a gardening book.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I use the MG Potting Mix with their fertilizer already added. The green bag, 2 cu feet costs $9.98. I think it is a rip off, you can add your own MG fertilizer for much less. I was mixing it with SuperSoil but I find the plants just are not growing well in it anymore. Plus it dries out way to fast. Here in NJ I bought MG Garden Soil to mix with it and I like it better, it is much heavier and does not seem to dry out daily. Though I have not been here long enough to see if the plants thrive in it.

Anne do you use your own home made compost?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the input!

Since I do have all these ingredients, I think I'll attempt to make my own mix.
My compost pile is not quite ready yet, but I do have a barrel full of peat moss, bagged compost/manure, and humus which I mixed today for the garden, and I just may use that! Hope that works!

BTW, I paid $8.88 for 2 cu ft. of MG w/fertilizer at Wal-Mart here in Florida, but I agree that it too, is a rip-off!

Darn, just saw it at Rose's for $4, thought that was too much for too little!

Kell, have you tried that "seedsaver stuff" I've been crowing about? http://davesgarden.com/t/383301/ We've been having so much rain here, haven't had the Brugs challenge yet, but it's got to be healthier from the soil bourne diseases and such, no little gnattie flies either!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You know Vi I did look for it at HD soon after I saw your thread but could not find it. I definitely will look for it when I get home. I really need something like that.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

kell, it's only at wallyworld ;)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

lol, now you tell me. Do you believe we have no Wallyworld in California? When I first heard tha tname I was sure it was a joke.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Walmart????

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, we have Walmart. Is that the same store?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

You mean there is a Wallyworld?????

ROTFLOL!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

so there is no such store as Wallyworld after all? LOL.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Hey kell, were we both assuming here? LOL

As in my thread, found that stuff by the grass seed at Walmart!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Lol Kell! All that time you thought it was a sperate store?

Wallyword = WalMart

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

This is so funny . . even here in Texas we refer to Walmart as Wallyworld!

Are y'all growing the Burgs in the ground or pots? The only thing I add to my awful clay soil here is compost and Peters 20-20-20 then they are on thier own. I do however buy the soil from the local nursery for $20.00 a yard to use in pots.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Actually, when I first started hearing Wallyworld I thought it was a joke and then a friend in Colorado assured me it was a real store. She was always going to Wallyworld. I had this weird picture of what it would look like in my mind. I should have been born a blonde! As soon as I get home I will go look for it. Thanks Vi!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL, kell, this sure has been FUN!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Vi,it sounds like you too need a more interesting life like I do! LOL

I will never use MG potting soil again. I used several bags of it this winter and regretted that greatly. It turned out the batch must not have been mixed properly. It was so acid, some plants almost died, and some of my brugs suffered from the low ph.

I started using Metro-mix 300 without any fertilizer added. I must have gone through 10 huge bags by now and have not had any problems. I even do all my cuttings in it and it works great.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Never heard of Metro-mix, where did you find it? Need to find some great deal on soil tho, going thru a ton with all my big pots!

Can we have a Potting Soil Co-Op? LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

We have terrible potting soil for sale in ca. I notice here in NJ they have lots of different kinds. Lots of rich dark humous for sale. You can't buy humus in Ca, at least in the bay area.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Sorry, I haven't checked back in a couple days here.........Kell, no, I don't make my own compost. I get it from the city (illegally, I must say). My mom lives in town, so she gets it for me. It's only for the city residents, she wouldn't use very much, so I just figure I'm using up her share! :>) Only bad part about it is all the weed seeds in it. I'm yanking lambsquarter and quackgrass out of the pailful I haven't used yet. It's good stuff, tho, so don't mind weeding it before I mix up the recipe.

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

I buy it at a nursery up the road a piece. It's made by Scotts.
They are normally $12.50 a bag, 2.8cubic feet. I have bought so many I get them for 10 now.
It's a bit expensive, but with all the problems I have had with other stuff it's worth it.
I did 40 cuttings a week ago (gearing up for the swap), not one has lost a single leaf.
I think the potting soil co-op would fail due to postage rates. LOL

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

kell, so that's where you are, lol! Durn, the party's over, it's been a mystery I've been trying to piece together for months now )c; Loved Frisco when I visted, got to take a chopper ride over Alcatraz and the Bridge, a mite cloudy tho. . .

Geeze Kris, I have bo idea what I'm doing for the swap this time--my plants may be all slime if this rain don't stop! Do need DIRT tho! Ya'd think that "we" of all people, ought to be able to pull something off here! Maybe should have looked into that worm co-op after all...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am 20 minutes from San Francisco if you speed............LOL

Vi,how do you use Seed Aide-to root cuttings,as a mulch,or?Do you mix it with soil or use it straight?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Mulch only, tho I'm gonna use it for all seeds, too!

Good to talk to you again, CC, how are you?

Thanks Vi!!!
I'm doing ok-if the rain don't wash me away :)
There is flash flood warnings out-so I may have to find higher ground.
