Looking at this picture, isnīt it just like a perfect herbaceous Magnolia (Magnoliaceae and Ranunculaceae are somehwat related families)? Very didactical photo :^)

Hi TomC_UK, your 'Nelly Moser' is as pretty as mine!

Glad you like it. The plant is new this year (which is probably why it looks so good ;-)) and I think it is gorgeous! Is it usual for the number of petals to vary? Tcfromky's above has 6 petals, the one I posted has 8 and there is another flower on my plant with only 5.

Monocromatico, you've lost me a bit but then I don't know Magnolias well...

Tom, my 'Nelly Moser' is about 4 or 5 years old. Here's another shot of more blooms. Total height on it is about 10 feet. This year it's produced an exceptional amount of gorgeous blooms.

I don't know the name of this one, it's about 2 or 3 years old. It has 6 petals. It bloomed before the 'Nelly Moser' and I didn't get a early shot of it's blooms. That's why this shot of the bloom isn't as pretty as it would have been had I took a foto of it when it first opened.

I'm not sure if it's unusual for the same cultivar to have a different number of petals from one plant to the next or not. But you bring up an interesting observation.

Wow! I look forward to mine in a few years. I regret putting mine against a fence that gets the afternoon sun though - I think the pink is being bleached out more than on yours.

Also, the blooms with different numbers of petals are actually on the same plant but what you wrote does make me wonder how much cultivars vary as they propagate around the world.

Do you have the very bottom of your clematis, where it goes into the ground, protected from full sun? I have two big pieces of driftwood that shades mine. I read somewhere that you're supposed to keep the bottom of a clematis protected from full sun.

Tom, here's a foto of our third clematis but I don't know the cultivar name. This is the second year we've had this one.

(Been away) Yes I read that I needed to keep the roots cool so have deep-planted the clematis and put down a bark-chip mulch. There is also a lupin in front of it so I hope it will be OK!

I have also planted a Montana Rubens Superba (flowering next spring I think) and have inherited with the house what I believe is a Clematis Jackmanii.

Tom, I've been conferring with another member here on DG and after seeing a foto of her Clematis 'Comtesse De Bouchaud' in the Plants Database, we've come to the conclusion that the foto of my third clematis above is the same variety. Also, the foto of my purple clematis just might be 'Jackmanii' too. I was talking it over with my DW and she thinks she remembers it being a 'Jackmanii.'
