The buds are almost open, I think tomorrow or the next day. So far they look nothing like culebra, but I hink that is expected.
Has anyone's bloomed yet? Liz? I thought yours was ahead of mine?
I CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER LOL.
Culebra x Jamaican yellow to bloom very soon
Not yet Dennis, they've broken through the calyx, maybe tomorrow. Just how disappointed are you going to be if they look like JY?
I won't be dissapointed really. At least the genes are in there (or so we are told). I hope this isn't a scam!
Where did it originate Dennis?
Hodnik's
Anticipation! Can hardly wait to see it! Hoping for the best.....
I have yet to see a Culebra flower. So are you hoping for a yellow colored Culebra bloom?
Kell, yes I guess that's the hope. But chances are, and by the looks of things it will be a plain flower, not likely worth a name. The plan is that culebra genes will help with a pollination back to culebra. Maybe then something will happen. I think it will be back cross after backcross, until something worth keeping arises. But, there is always a chance that it wasn't really a culebra in the beginning.
That is a big problem but hopefully it will have a culebra trait to reassure you. So this is the beginning of your quest. Kind of exciting esp. if you eventually succeed!
Dennis: Does it have the Culebra leaves?
I'm looking forward to seeing a photo Dennis! Hopefully it shows some signs of aurea in the bloom!
Hibiscus, it has regular leaves.
Well, I can not wait to see those pictures, Dennis. Mine has some way to go yet :)
It's looking pretty much JY to me. I can't see any culebra traits at all on it. How about you Dennis?
Liz it's open???!!!
Wow! Big moment :)
LOL....everything's gone silent in anticipation!
Just to let you know, I am leaving town in a couple hours, so I am pollinating them now before I go. So Liz will have to post a pic when hers is open. OK Liz? I'm dying to see it but must sever them for the good of the hybrid. It's the genes not the flower which is needed in my big plans.
It has sickeningly sweet smelling flowers. Still don't know the colour though, still early.
I will use the ID chart and see if there are more clues there.
*lol* Did you succeed classifying it according to the ID-chart? :) Has it got more color? I am all questions tonight *lol*
Well it is remaining yellow, which is nice. I haven't had a spare moment to ID it. But having pollinated about 8-9 flowers already I noticed one thing. The anthers are stuck together in some and loose in others, about half and half. (I didn't count).
Culebra is supposed to have loose anthers, and sauveolens (JY is listed as sauv) are stuck together right when opening, chances are that good that it is the hybrid planned.
Mine is yellow too. I'm still not impressed, Dennis, we paid for this puppy to come from France, phyto, shipping and exchange (exchange ouch) and it just looks like JY. My camera seems to have died on me, hopefully tomorrow I can post a pic. Once again, I'm not impressed. Did I mention that I'm not impressed???
Did I also mention that I composted Jamaican Yellow last year?? LOL
SO Miss Lizzy, I was wondering if you were impressed with your Culebra x Jamaican yellow?
Well, Miss Kell, in a word ~ no.
You know your feeling about FP? Think about paying to bring it over from France. LOL
But maybe Dennis is right. So I will contribute mine to Dennis' hybridization plan.
How much does it cost to bring it over? Sorry you are so disappointed with it.
I'll have to dig out the papers Kell. I just know that at the time I felt that I had to order a bunch to amortize the phyto and shipping. They were Ff then, now they are euro, which is close to par for you, but ridiculous for us.
psst ~ did I tell you we got the 2010 Olympic Games today?
Ff?
When I heard that today I imagined your family going nuts with excitement! You could even make a fortune renting out rooms in your house! LOL Congrats! What fun you all will have.
French francs.
2010 ~ I hope I live that long, LOL.
Oh I did not realize it was so far off! Well, you should be about what 37 then? LOL. I bet you have front row seats!
Gongratulations with having the OL 2010 :) Liz, I hope (culebra x Jamaican Yellow) x Jamaican Yellow will work out for Dennis :) Since you had all the trouble to import another yellow suaveolens (with recessive culebra genes) you deserves to see that yellow culebra flower. That will remove that frosty pink-feeling I hope :)
Tonny, the plan is (C x JY) x C. The less JY the better. Personally I am skeptic anything will come of this. I know Lockwood has some narrow leaved results but I haven't seen these articles or photos yet, hopefully that will open my eyes. I am sure if anything happens it will take a number of generations/years.
Yes Liz, today is mines 3rd day open, it is yellow, a good yello but a little green still. Nothing special. Maybe culebra genes. Better have C genes!!! At least seedlings will, if pods take.
The best thing to do would be to compare a flower of JY and a flower of C X JY!
Anything's possible Dennis...I got my fingers crossed for you!

There is nothing to do but to keep on trying. If Loockwood could do it so can you :) btw. I have a copy of the thesis underways, but it is a gift for a friend, so I don`t dare puzzling around reading it *lol* I will have to order one more as it tickles my nose (vast area *lol*) to read up on his hybridizing results :)
because you have an incredible setting there and what a great pink! Which is that? wahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I want it! LOL. and the poor brug there so scorned sure looks like it has no idea you have such evil thoughts towards it, it looks so big and healthy!
Sure looks like JY to me. Nice pic, what is the pink Liz? I dread going through the ID chart because I don't want to know that it isn't anything special. Tonight!
