Is anyone out there interested in cane begonias? I have 2 very nice ones. I have always enjoyed growing them. Where I live tuberous begonias can't take the humidity. Cane begs are always in flower and make a lovely display.
What do y'all grow?

Cane begonias
Hi Flicker,
They're new to me. But I enjoyed reading about them in the plantsdatabase. Some of the tropicals I'm growing are butterfly ginger, oleanders, and brugs and datura. Oleander is a fabulous plant in my area that doesn't require much attention.
I have several that I started from cuttings a few years ago.. I love them also..They bloom constantly and pretty much year round, even in the house.. I keep mine outside under the shade of a huge southern oak..This is where they stay until cold weather makes me have to bring them in. I have a light pink, darker pink and a sort of coral colored with spotted leaves.
Larkie
Right now I am rooting one called Matchmaker. I have a nice silver leaf and one that might be Torch. My patio is the perfect light. The only drawback is the spent flower drop.
Are all angel wing begs able to be grown as caning plants?
Hey Flicker! just saw this post. I have always been in love with canes and have had a couple for years.
My new one that is really doing well is called peanut brittle. Haven't gotten it to bloom yet. I lost my silver wing -- Looking Glass. Would love to find another start of that.
I bought another one, Pink Polka Dot, I think. Not close to the plant or tag. It isn't doing well. Has dropped most of it's leaves, etc... for someone that usually have such good luck with these I am disheartened over this one.
I have one, too, and love it. I'm not sure which one it is, though, since it came as a cutting from my Mom and she picked it up who knows where. I would love to have more, but haven't been able to find any locally yet. I've been considering purchasing a couple online. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions on a good place to get them? What are your favorite varieties? I'm keeping mine inside, since I don't really have a nice place for this outdoors at this time, and I would need to do the same for any new ones.
I would love to trade. Don't have pics though.
My peanut brittle has a very spotted leaf and I don't know the color of the bloom.
I took the last surviving piece of my pink polka dot and put it in water. Don't know what I'm doing wrong with that one.
My largest cane has gotten 5' tall or more. My kids got it for me about 20 years ago in a hanging basket for Mother's Day. It has a lighter green leaf with light pink blooms.
I would love to trade as well. I can post my pics as soon as DH re-installs the program to read the files from my digital camera. I just picked up a couple new ones from a local nursery - yay!
These new ones weren't labeled, but I think they look like Don Miller (like your pic, Flicker), and Looking Glass. They are nice full hanging baskets, so lots to use for cuttings :)
The one from my Mom, I think is a Lucerna variety. It looks like the ones that sclarke and elize posted here:
http://plantsdatabase.com/go/675/
And I'm pretty sure it has pink flowers, but not sure what shade of pink, since it hasn't bloomed recently. I think I let it get too dry between waterings.
Oh, and I have a dragonwing with red flowers, if anyone is interested.
Sounds like everyone has some nice ones. Of course, I haven't seen one yet I didn't like *lol*. Can't find a pic for that peanut brittle one, though, and the name has me intrigued. KathyJo, hope your pink polka dot pulls through, sounds lovely!
Oh, and maybe you've all seen it, but it's new to me and I thought I'd share this great site with tons of begonia pics.

Oh great! Do you prefer to trade rooted cuttings or will just a nice size cutting do? I like the peanutbutter sound and the Lucerne picture. The site certainly does have lots of info. Thanks.
a nice size cutting would do for me, as long as it's packed well.
My home e-mail is hopelessly spammed so I will e-mail you at my work e-mail.
My pink polka dot is on the endangered list. Although I broke off the last nice looking piece and put it in water to root. It has put out a nice root and looking better. I will watch it with great care , as it is such a neat contrast begonia with the others.
Several pics of my angel wings will follow...
The first one is of cuttings of one that I'm unsure the name, maybe a Lucerna?? The sunlight really picked up the color on the back of the leaves. They are very pink, but not quite as dark as it looks on here.
These leaves are about 7 1/2" long and 3 1/2" wide.

Heather, I love your pictures and the hyperlink pics. I just have one dragon wing and an unknown Angel Wing. Really got to start looking for these, they're beautiful.
I believe I have the lucerna one. I believe you are correct about the Looking Glass. That is the one I had and lost. Would LOVE to trade for that one. And the next one that you say is Don Miller is wonderful looking too. Aren't they great?
catlady- glad you like the pics! It's not too hard when you have such a nice subject :) What does your angel wing look like? Can you post a pic? I just love looking at all the pics that people post on here.
KathyJo- I'd be happy to trade the Looking Glass with you. Your peanut brittle sounds interesting, if you have enough to go around. What does your other unnamed one look like?
Flicker- does anything I posted interest you for a trade? and thanks for starting this thread!
Anyone else looking to trade?
Thank you all for the pics. I will have to put my others up for you to see. These look like very good trades!
Flicker, It hasn't bloomed much this year, but I have it on an intensive fertilizer program. I finally have the connector for the digital camera so will try to get a picture up.
I would love to get in on the trade when anyone wants to swap cuttings. I will wait until it is not so hot to send mine and ask that you do the same. They can steam to death in the package if the postman makes a mistake and lets them get too hot or leaves them in the sun on the porch. I will take some pictures of mine and post them if I can figure how to do that. Calalily told me that the dragon wing begonias aren't as pretty when they are taken from cuttings and she was right. The older ones kind of play out and the cuttings don't bush out as well as the parent plant. I have had great luck using the little florist tubes filled with water for mailing cuttings as they don't let the cuttings dry out. I love the torch and matchmaker begonias that you posted the pictures of Flicker.
They aren't cane begonias but do any of you have summer begonias. They come up every year and look a lot like the cane begonias. I can send those to anyone who might want to trade. I can send you a picture but have forgotten how to post it. Just send me an email and I will return the picture to you. Nooowwww! Where the heck did I put those instructions for posting that Melody sent me?????

Love the pictures of yours Flicker!
Wow, great plants, Flicker! Are those leaves on Matchmaker as long as they look? *sigh* Guess I'll just have to wait patiently for it to grow, so you can (hopefully) share it later, just like I'm sending good thoughts out to KathyJo's pink polka-dot :-)
Elena, thanks for the tip about the cuttings for the dragonwing. I didn't know that, since I haven't tried any cuttings of it yet. And you have mail coming, since I'm curious what summer begonias are, and if I have any.
I hope to send out a few pictures tomorrow of various begonias that I have to those of you who have emailed me. Heather, send me your email address and I will include you when I send pictures. I wouldn't advise against rooting the dragonwing but just wanted to say that it isn't as showy as the original. I do root them though. They look fine when combined with other plants that help fill in the pot.
