Buying a Pond Liner

(Zone 4b)

I have been planning on buying a small pond liner from ebay for my new formal potager that Im building. There seems to be 2 types. 45 mil EPDM or a thinner liner called tetra. I live in southern Maine with long cold winters. Does anyone have any advice on choosing the right liner?

gretagreta - i've spent more time than i care to tell you re-doing ponds.... my theory is "do it right, or do it twice"... i would definetly get the 45 epdm... once it's down, you don't have to worry about it. it may be a little more costly, but think of the trouble you'll save if the other one doesn't quite work out!

Yes, do it right the first time. I have had great success with Unit Liner. Especially talking with their experts on what pump to use and many other questions. Don't know if they are expensive or not; only that they are good.

greta, a very experienced pond builder here recently tried to line his pond with that new lighter weight liner and for the size of liner he had to put in he had to seam it. The seam failed three times!!!! He then went and bought an EPDM liner and put it OVER the top of the other liner and now he has a new pond with no leaks. He said he blew 400 dollars and 30,000 gallons of city water on this project trying to save his back and some money. I would also recommend the EPDM 45 mil or even 60 mil.

this man I talked about has built ponds professionally for years and was also a dealer for many years so he knows what he is doing. I don't know if he just got a bad batch of what happened but he sure wasn't happy with the outcome and money expended on his retirement income.
